Camalien LED watch …almost ALIVE!

Design submitted by Peter (UK) & Sam (Germany)

Peter & Sam say: The initial idea for Camalien was a watch that changes its colour with the mood of the wearer. But mood is an abstract thing that could be dozens of measurable things in reality. We kept the colour changing aspect and gave the watch a camera.
The display of Camalien reacts to the environment like a chameleon.

The base technology for this concept consists of multicolour LEDs. They are arranged in a honeycomb-like array creating this cool hexagon pattern similar to reptilian skin. With such an array many things are possible:

Time telling: Time can be told with the press of a button. Four numbers in HH/MM mode tell the time. Another press reveals the date in MM/DD mode.

Assimilation mode: This mode lets the display pulse in the colour of the environment, looking like an adapting chameleon. The camera delivers the necessary data and a software translates reality into hexagon matrix colour information.

Time pulse: The could be an automatic animation mode that lets the display pulse up in current environment colours with an overlay of the current time.

Wordstream mode: The array also allows to post messages. It’s nothing for emergencies, but fun! We suggest an interactivity with a smartphone (Bluetooth) or the computer (USB) to be able to edit text. Just tell everyone what you think!

Response mode: With this mode, the watch displays words, that are normally associated to colours and patterns. Imagine, you are in a blank white room. Camalien would show “boring” to you. If you are in a room with red flashing lights, Camalien would show for example “ouch, my eye!” This behaviour lets the watch seem to have a consciousness.

Capture mode: This would allow you to capture an environment and save it, by holding the button for two seconds. So parallel to the automatic Assimilation mode, this gives you a chance to control the display. If you like the colours of a painting, you can save them.

Composition mode: This mode offers a range of display patterns (stripes, dots, circles etc.). You can capture some colours nearby and then compose them into a geometrical pattern of your choice. Adapt the display to the situation you are in, be it a game of your favourite team or being in the cinema or a club or even a museum!

Swarm mode: Since we suggest Bluetooth connectivity, Camalien should also react to other watches of it’s kind in range. Every watch in range could suddenly show up the same display or share previously programmed information… the possibilities are endless.

Camalien is a fashion accessory with quite some options to customise. Adapt to your environment, show your mood, display your team colours, make your outfit complete!

  1. Great watch design!! I really like the many different displays and colors. And the fact it has Bluetooth, it a definite plus!

    • Glad you like it Cristof! To make the most of the interactive quality and customisation of the design it makes sense to make it compatible with smart phones and computers etc. Cheers for the comment! 😀

    • I hope so to, most of the features are based on relitively cheap existing tech, but they have never been combined in a watch (to my knowledge) before. Nice little challenge for TF if they chose to develop it! 😀

  2. Man I’d DEFINITELY buy this. All of the toyko flash watches are a bit weird to read, and seem like they’d take a bit of learning to get used too despite all being beautiful. This one however has some seriously cool tech in it AND is easy to read. Plus I’m excited to see what kind of stuff can be done with the bluetooth cellphone connectivity. Maybe something like caller ID to your phone? Name of the caller scrolls across the display?

    5/5 stars, would buy.

    • The posibilities are endless, yeah caller ID would be a nice feature or scrolling txt mesages. Yeah I think it would be a nice addition to TF’s range. Lets hope they do too! 😀

    • Hi Seth!

Oh yeah, bluetooth would open up a wide range of possibilities. Expanding phone functions back to the watch is a cool idea. Letting it flash in a special way or display text when getting a call? Woof, cool! Thanks for the inspiring comment and your vote!

  3. My absolute fav design so far…I love the black scaly look when its not colored. And with it able to go from that to so many colors is awesome. Camera to detect the environment is pure genius stuff man! The possibilities seem endless. This must be the smartest watch ever made and i assume it will be a tad more expensive than the rest. I only heard about Tokyo Flash about a month ago and tonight im ordering my 1st one. I will definitely be buying the Camalien as soon as its available. Great design! I want!…asap

    • Yeah the contast between the subtley menacing dark of the display when unlit and the bright colours gives the watch two personalities. The combination of features would make for unlimited possibilities. I could imagine that if TF released this it would be top end of their pricing (but worth it!) Hopefully you will get the chance to buy one day! Thanks for the feedback! 😀

    • Wow that’s nice, congrats to your first Tokyoflash watch!

Yeah, If you have the feeling that the possibilities are endless, we did a good job. Hm, a more expensive addition to Tokyoflash’s line-up wouldn’t harm I think 😉 Maybe they dare this step…

      Thanks for the cool comment!

    • Pete, it’s always fun when two creative minds work on a good concept (without flattering ourselves). It’s cool to see such a concept developing with each little idea.

Hi Toky, thanks for posting this concept! Very nice they you highlighted the modes. We have a little novel up there, so structure is higly welcome. May the infiltration begin, mwahaha 😀

THANKS EVERYBODY FOR THE COMMENTS SO FAR!!!

    5 * / Yes.
    Remarks:
Long ago, I proposed a watch that changes colour depending on the mood and the heat from the body, it was called “Snap Ring 2”, following a plastics material which already exists (project ever published?)

    • Sorry Andrew I didnt spot your comment before. Thanks for the compliment! Hopefully TF will take pity on us and produce the watch! x^^x. I have seen your linked designs and I know you have submitted more, hopefully we will see them soon! Keep up the good work and thanks for the comment! 😀

      • Pity? Lol ^^ I would say, they would do themselves a favor making this watch 😉 But I wouldn’t envy them for the work behind it.

Andrew, thanks for the comment! We hope you’re right about the getting published!

The yin yang watch watch a nice approach to a watch concept. I agree with Pete, if you have something to show, let it all out!

  7. Incredible design. Really. Next-level stuff and the way that strong design should go – focusing on both being wearable art, functional and also appearing to part of whatever environment the wearer is part of. I love it. I’d buy multiples.

    • Wow incredible comment! Im glad it appeals on different levels. I hope you get the chance to buy multiples one day! x^^x

    • I love the way you guys work together. I’m currently working on some designs, but I don’t have the CAD skills yet. (I don’t think I’ll ever get to this level!) It’d be good if I could team up with someone professional…

Thanks for the compliment! Yeah my crazy seems to work well with Sam’s eccentricty. We are usually pretty happy with the results, so its nice when people agree!

Remember CAD skillz are only a bonus, TF will always post good design regardless of the media used!
Hopefully we will see some of your designs here soon! 😀

      • Thanks for that info, Pete. I submitted it over a month ago. I thought the idea was great, but compared to most of these submissions, the presentation was not the best!

Anyway, I’ve got another one coming. Stay tuned!

  9. I would not change a thing about the design of this watch i am completely satisfied with the concept, that only thing that would make it a nogo for my wallet would be if the wrong material was chosen. I know im shooting stars but i would love it if a special edition of this watch could be made with a tungsten band on the inner of the wristlet, with the outer wristlet having the hex-comb coating made out of some kind of protective rubber coating.

    Like

    • Ummm that sounds like a nice combitaion of materials! You have fince taste sir!
I hope one day your wallet takes a bashing as you get one of these on order! 😉
Thanks for the feedback and the epic comment! 😀

    • I agree with Pete – very nice taste! The material choice is an essential decision for a concept. Hopefully Tokyoflash get to this point in the future. Thanks for the input!

  10. Glad to see this is getting some good votes & excited comments. Its an inspiring design, well done Sam & Pete.

Having a camera in there is a great idea & of course you could use it to take snapshots of crazy moments when you don’t have a camera close by.

Despite the antiquated watch industry we are pushing forward into new areas & most certainly we will include tech like this asap.

    Like

    • Hello Toky, so cool to see you commenting! Thank you for the compliment!

Oh Pete and I are glad too, seeing how the idea is recieved. We were wondering before.

The snapshot idea is so obvious yet we didn’t think about this. If a camera with a pleasing resolution can be that small for a watch, oh yes please, try something like this! Here we picked a “cheap” low-res cam that serves the needs of the display, which in return is, we have to admit, quite a task. We assumed that implementing multicolor LEDs is feasable. As I like to say lately: ideas now, limitations later 😉

Looking back at what you have brought us, I can say, whatever you do, it will rock!

    • Hi TF, Thanks for the compliment!
Nice to see that you are looking to use this kinda tech, I was worried we had been a little ambitious.
Snapshots would be a nice additional feature, so you could perhaps upload the pics to a computer or smart phone (standard or hexilated (thats a real word now)
Thanks for the feedback (and posting this design of course) 😀

    • Wow that’s nice how you describe it, not only looking cool but also acting cool. Oh yesh, hexagons are fun! We chose them because we had a chameleon skin in the back of our minds and they make a perfect stacking pattern for cells/items/leds. Your forecast sounds wonderful! Thanks a couple times for the nice comment!

      Like

    • Steve, that’s an interesting hint! Button, cam, display, fun – that would suffice indeed. Maybe the big world that opens up with the blutooth connectivity is too much (too much options? too high price?), but it’s tooo much to ignore actually. I think the LEDs are the actual challenge, but TF would know better 🙂 Thank you for the clear statements!

  15. Wow! This is amazing. I look at some of the watches on here and, while they are awesome looking, I don’t think I could stomach taking the chance at spending the price tag on it (being a student and not having much of an expendable income), but this is one thing that I would not be afraid to spend my money on, even if it was well over $200+! It’s just way too cool!
