Design submitted by Peter from the UK.
Peter says: “This is RECG (Rotational Electrocardiogram). The inspiration for this design is a heart rate monitor or ecg. I have seen other concepts before using similar inspiration but all seemed to have a very abstract time telling method. I wanted to use an easy recognisable time telling method using off the shelf technologies.
The watch is essentially a conventional analouge watch, the hands in this case have been replaced by disks with glass arrow shaped cutouts. The outward facing arrow displays the minutes and the inward facing arrow displays the hours. The time is read in a conventional manner.
The two arrows look like they are connected by a glass “gap” Β and when backlit look like an ecg. The backlight is supplied by a ring shaped array of LEDs that pulse in a circular motion to give the ecg effect. The watch could be fitted with a heart rate sensor to display the wearers heart rate via the pulse of the LEDS. This may be useful for fitness freaks!Β (If the LED backlight was difficult to produce a coloured disk powered by the seconds drive of the analogue movement behind the hand disks would give a similar effect.)
The pulse effect gives the watch a very dramatic effect that hopefully will apeal to a wide audience. The time telling method is conventional so should appeal to traditionalists. The addition of the heart rate monitor may attract sporty people and hyper-condriacts! lol
This watch designs stands out due to its dramatic look, entertaining animation and conventional time telling method. The watch is based on conventional technologies that should allow it to be commercialy viable.”

Static is ok, moving light is even better

The plan would be to have the watch tell the time like a regular analogue (unilluminated) and when you press the button the light would rotate like the animation and help highlight the time aswell as a fun light show. Thanks for the comment! π

i would buy this as a gift in an instant, but for myself, i would prefer some indicators…i have difficulty telling analog time without them.. π
5* – excellent work!

I dont think adding markers would be a problem, it might give the watch a bit of extra detail, at the minute it is very simple especially when the light would be off. I might do a couple of renderings with markers when I get 5.
Thanks for the feedback and the vote! π

A great looking watch, but what happens when both hans need to be in the same position (e.g. 00:00 or 01:05)? What does it look like then?
LikeLike
The display would look like a diamond shape when the two hands are “overlapping” which although doesnt quite look like the ecg at those points would still look interesting when the rotating light is on. Thanks for the comment! π
LikeLike
Like Sam, I think the overlap period will not look so good – this was my concern too. 2 lines would get around this, but you would then have to reduce the “spikes” or the hour “circle” would be too small and look odd.
LikeLike
Yeah Sam also suggested two seperate lines/sets of spikes (off the blog) as some ecg’s do have two lines so would still be in keeping. I will try it and see what it looks like and post a link here

What a great looking watch!!!
I love it, except one flaw: I think the minutes before overlapping time until afterwards (a time span of 8 minutes 22 times a day) won’t look that cool because the line is interrupted. This was actually the reason to give up such ideas. Maybe there is a satisfying solution. Well I think, it’s already satisfying people and it should get pretty viral in the internet :3 Good luck Peter and supportive 5*/YES

Yeah the times when the hands overlap will look less ECG-Ish but hopefully still interesting. Hopefully there are ways of improving this further. If you had similar ideas that reassuring! Thanks for the feedback & the vote! π

The LEDs would be activated by the wearer or would be intermitant like other existing TF models. I dont think the power requirements would be much worse than seven for example. Who knows if TF choose to develop it and add a little of their magic you might be tempted. Thanks for the feedback! π

This one would definitely need to take advantage of the 7even’s battery technology to keep the pulse going…
If the hour and minute hands were visible in normal light, you could use the pulse as just a back light for dark places. It would likely still need a USB recharge though, because I would definitely like to see a constant pulse option.
Pretty good looking design, Pete. I’m partial to the analog style, big 5/y here!
LikeLike
Yeah the intention is you could read the time without the pulse running like you can with other stealthy black watches. I think you right that it will need seven’s battery life and usb. Im glad you like it, with TF’s influence could be epic. I have a couple more analogs in waiting so hopefully they will also appeal. Thanks for the great feedback! π

Now i would by this in a ‘heartbeat’! π Visually stunning and very clever use of the theme without being gimmicky.
An audio ‘flatline’ alarm sound would be cool too. I personally wouldn’t use the heart monitor function but is a nice angle to make it more appealing to a wider market.
Setting to 5* and a yes….CLEAR!

Yay Im glad you like the tweaked version. I love the idea of the flat line tone for an alarm thats inspired! I metntioned the sensor as it went well with the theme and TF allways seem to be trying to use different techy features (like the breathalyser design) Thanks for the feedback and the vote!

Looks brilliant… my only issue would be battery. Would be annoying to have to always charge it… or maybe be able to set a “sleep” time… i.e. between 10pm and 8am it would only flash once every minute or not at all, unless a button is pressed. Then between 8am and 10pm it would pulse therefore not wasting valuable battery life in the evenings when it’s not needed.
LikeLike
Hi CD4CK,
My original intention was that the light pulse would only activate when a button is pressed to use minimum power as the time could be seen in daylight anyway. I think it would be sensible to have a few modes like continous, every hour, every 15mins etc so the wearer can choose how often and therefor how often they will need to charge. Thanks for the feedback and the brilliant comment! π

This is a really good concept. The way you mix analog and digital display by making the light pass through the hands is brilliant. Plus, you managed to give it the shape of a cardiogram. Don’t worry about the rating. The idea is good, the comments are good and it generates interest on the web.
It is original, viable, really well thought and it looks good. Good job !
