RESET watch tilts time to your wrist movement.

Sam says:Β This watch concept is a proposal for the usage of an accelerometer. The tilting angle of the watch could define the look of the display. Only one special angle lets the watch show the time in a readable fashion. The wearer could define this angle by pressing a button when facing the display. Doing so would RESET the display. Any other angle different from the defined one, causes the numbers to dissolve. The bigger the tilting angle, the stronger the effect.

For any other person the watch would look cryptic, like an incomprehensible technology. When the wearer looks at it at the defined angle, he or she can tell the time easily. Since the perfect view angle changes when lying or hanging upside down for example, the RESET button makes the time appear anytime. The display is made of radial arrays of segments that allow the circular transformation used for the dissolving of the numbers. For a clear vision, I suggest mirror LCD on black ground. A random animation would let the watch look like a futuristic machinery. An EL backlight illuminates the display at night.

The RESET is a watch for sci-fi fans with a sense for fashion.

  5. When I first saw this I thought you’d beaten me to it, Sam! I’m working on something a bit similar, but now I’ve read the description I see it’s not as similar as I first feared…=)

    It looks very cool, and the idea of using an accelerometer is inspired. The display itself is a good combination of high-tech (the dissolving numbers and animation) and old-school (the low-resolution monochrome pixels). It’d be interesting to see how it would look in reality. Damn cool, is my guess. If there’s one thing I’d change it’s (as usual) that I’d like to see the case and strap better integrated with the display.

    All in all; very good work! =)

    Well no, it would just be really problematic to show the time to someone, only you can read it.
    I’m also wondering, of the accelerometer would react with the vibrations of some car or train for example.

    Maybe a stability zone more than a specific angle would be good. Or more than that : a non linear deformation but something that, more the angle is far from the stability one, faster the dissolution is.

    For example : take the stability angle to 0Β°. At 1Β° you had 1% of dissolution, 2Β°, 2% and so one, but for example after 10Β°, for each Β°more, you would had 2% and after 20Β°, 4% and so one, 30Β° by 8% of dissolution…
    An exponential dissolution !

    But 5* anyway !

      I was in the middle of trying to find a situation to help the broken arm guy but then I realized, he wouldn’t even be able to put the watch on in the first place πŸ™‚

      Oh yes, please, it should be super problematic for others to read the time. They look at you like a car when you are able to tell them the time then showing them the cryptic display xD

      I like the idea of having a stronger dissolution at a bigger angle. That’s what I actually did. It moves one pixel first, then two, then three and so on.

      Since you might need to press the reset button anyway, because your ideal position isn’t always the same, the display tolerance doesn’t need to be high. I do agree though, in a certain span, the display should stay readable. That would also compensate vibrations.

        I had well understood for the dissolution and the angle. What I meaned was to change not the dissolution only, but also the dissolution rate.
        So first, for one step of angle, you had 1 pixel move, for the next step, 2 pixels moves, so a total of 3 pixels, next angle step 3 pixels moves at once, so a total of 6 pixels and so on.
        But I look again and it doesn’t seems possible to modify the dissolution rate with the few amount of pixels πŸ˜‰
