Design submitted by Peter from the UK.
Peter says: This is “Exoskeleton” a variation on a theme of an earlier design called “Vertebrae“.
Like Vertebrae this design is inspired by armour and exoskeletons and features armour like plates that make up the body of the watch. The gaps between these plates supplies the time telling display.
The time is told in either a digital or 12/5/9 format by stripes of LEDs between the armour plates. This gives the watch an easily read but cryptic looking display which is visually interesting and tactile. The stripes of LEDs also allow for a range of animations and colour combinations.
This design has a bio-engineered futuristic look which should appeal to fans of anime, mecha and gaming. I imagine this would generally appeal more to guys but in the right finishes could have a jewelry like quality which may also entice the ladies.
The armoured look in combination with two intuitive time telling methods sets this design apart from others.
Sci-fi-tastic!
The two-tone one with the red stripe is excellent, it’s quite ‘out there’ so you need to be brave to wear it. The black one is more accessible. However, fashion judges be damned – The stripe one is too good not to get – ha ha!
Having the 2 time modes is good, but in this case I’m tempted to say the 12-5-9 may be enough. The number mode is a little hard to read which sort of defeats the purpose of it. I’d be more than happy with the 12-5-9 only.
You have used several materials in the examples. I really like the idea of PU strap with metal armour, but I am also intrigued by the last one with the almost chainmail style strap.
Great work & all the best!

Thanks a lot Toky for posting and commenting π
I wasn’t sure how this one would be received on the blog, vertebrae was quite popular so to follow that one up has its risks. The two tone one with the stripe started off life as plain silver but looked a little plain so I pimped it up a bit lol. It turned out to be my favourite so it was worth doing. I’d be happy with just the 12/5/9 time telling if that made it more feasible/viable. Armoured fingers crossed, cheers again! π

I want to see this one happen by tomorrow, ahah. If I could I would press that like button until it’s in production. The piece is truly timeless and can only be improved upon throughout time. Really do hope it’s kept around and evolves.

Take my money! That looks really nice and is easy enough to tell time with. Highly sophisticated and technologically advanced look makes it feasible for many situations. Just make one with white lighting or white and purple! Black or the black with gunmetal looks really nice.

White and purple sounds like a vivid combination, if I get a spare moment I will do a rendering and see what that looks like. Cheers for the awesome feedback Kloryc! π

Hi Pete, I would have called the “scolopendre”.
That’s right, the 12-5-9 is more readable, perhaps that it would be necessary to facilitate the figures for the second version?
5/Y for βSuperWatchManβ!

It does look like some kind of armour plated creature so your name does fit rather well. Id be pretty relaxed about the name if it stood a chance of development π Cheers for the feedback, vote and super name! π

If the design is validate, how many times after, the watch is on the shop ? (i can’t wait :D)

If the design was chosen for development (and it’s a big if), it seems to take typically between 6-12 months if there are no technical issues. π

I supprised this design is proving so poular (so far) I very nearly didnt submit it actually as I wasnt convinced it would be liked. Just goes to show you just cant guess how designs will be recieved.
You should totally re-submit any version or variation of spine, its was proper cool!!!!

This is an excellent engineered fashion bracelet 12-5-9 Binary wristwatch. However Pete prefer the Bio-Mechanical alien concept of the Digital watch βVertebraeβ: https://blog.tokyoflash.com/2013/06/vertebrae-if-aliens-wore-watches/

Cheers for the comment and the link to Vertebrae! Just glad one of them floats yer boat. Fingers crossed one tempts TF into taking it further. π

I loved Vertebrae with the amazing structure. This is a toned-down version, which should have wider appeal and, possibly, be easier to make.
I’m not so keen in the digital mode (the dots joining the vertical lines don’t grab me), but the 12-5-9 is excellent.
I would still prefer Vertebrae (maybe a version 2 with 12-5-9 format would be even better), but if this got made with 12-5-9 format, I’d definitely buy one. Choosing the colours would be hard though, if TF made the styles you show – I like all apart from the first one.
Definitely 5*/Y – good luck.

Cheers for the feedback Nev, I must admit that vertebrae is one of my favourite of my submissions probably due to it being a little bit “out there” This one is much more subtle which like you say may make it more accessible for more people. I’d be happy if either were considered for development and would be flexible with the time telling methods. Fingers crossed there is a happy medium that would suit TF’s criteria. Cheers again sir! π

It’s nice. I like the curved upward LED’s. I like the 12-5-9. I don’t like the digital. Not having the vertical lines is bad because it’s not clear what the digits are, but having them will ruin the overall look.

Yeah it was tempting when I first modelled it to put some small vertical LEDs in to help with the digits but it just didn’t look right so went with the cryptic ones. 12/5/9 seems to be the consensus on the one. Hopefully one time telling method is enough to tempt the TF development elves! π cheers for the support sir! π
