Turbine LED Watch Design

Design submitted by Peter from UK.

Peter figured out a way to tell time using an image of a jet engine.

To tell the time, you simply pull the cord out of the bezel.  This spins the turbine blades.  The kinetic energy created powers the LEDs mounted on one of the blades which creates the illusion of the time floating in mid air.

  1. I like it, Peter. Very cool idea…I had wanted to find a way to apply the same idea (spinning LEDs – I have a toy that can show Happy Birthday when you spin it – that’s what gave me the idea).. anyway, i didn’t find a way to make it work. Yours is very neat. Pretty cool-looking. Not feminine enough for me to wear myself, but 5* for creativity and a nice visual! 😉

    • I have done two watches based on this principle. If you like this check out Sputnik on my fb page (PF Design) click on my yellow name to go straight there, it maybe more suitable for a ladies wrist. Thanks for the comment! 🙂

  2. I’m blown away and definitely a fan. 5* and yes. I think I’d like 4 of them: one to go on each wrist and ankle so I could be a Peter Fan. 🙂 Keep ’em coming Pete!

    • hahaha thank you Lloyd, if you had four how would you pull all the cords at the same time? Thant would make a good youtube video! hehe “Peter Fan” hehe I forget you like the odd pun. Thanks a lot Lloyd! 😉

  3. Pete, I have a graphic collusion and project a little “crazy” attract me.
    5 * and bound Yes
Now, as usual, I would like a metal version of this wonderful project, please Pete?

  4. Not new idea, but great you bring it into wrist watch. Pull the cord to spin the turbine, sounds interesting compared to spin it using electricity which consume massive power. This is real gadget and will be hot cakes sold at thinkgeek. Cheers!

    • Yeah the principle has been used for years in clocks, usually with a side to side movement, that was why I was confident it would work in a wrist watch. It would be nice if the power could be supplied kinetically and the pulling of the cord is more user interactive than just pressing a button. Thanks for the support! 🙂

  5. I see this watch spreading on the external websites like a virus. It’s fantastic!

+ this time literal is perfect. The turbine theme is visually and practically translasted perfectly into a wrist watch
+ the cord pulling. It’s a cool gesture on one hand. On the other hand it’s a preferable technology, creating light by human power!
+ the glossy white. Oh yeah, this airplane feeling is welcome

You maybe need a covering glass or you might puree insects 😉

I’m all excited about this one. It would be (or already is?) a joy for TF to do research for this I think. It’s really a wonderful example of an unusual watch. 5*/YES without any hesitation. Good luck to you Bro!

    • Im going to put this comment in my scrapbook! hehe
Yeah I think a glass cover would be sensible!
It also looks quite nice in polished aluminium and stealthy black too, kinda of a retro feel
I hope your right about it being featured on other blogs, we will just have to wait and see.
As ever I thank you for your support! Cheers Sam 🙂

  6. This is fantastic! TF has to make this. I remember the clocks with this style of display. Its got to be doable. 5* and Yeah!

  7. Now this I like, clean looking case, dramatic face and optical illusion display! whats not to like! 5 stars and Yes

  8. WINNER WINNER CHICKEN DINNER!!! And I think being able to puree insects would be a plus, maybe you could create a vacuum and suck them in. But seriously nice work 5 * and congrats

  9. Damn Pete you are hyperproductive. A watch a day ? 😉

Good idea to rethink that system, especially with the turbine theme.
The shape is really original, and +1 for the energy saving. congrats !

    • hehe, when I started submitting concepts to TF for the first couple of weeks I was litterally submitting a concept a day. I have slowed down a bit since then trying to improve the quality.
It would be nice for this design to be fully kinetic, I dont know if this is something TF have looked into.
Im glad you like it, thanks for the positive comment! 🙂

  10. are the blades covered by glass or some kind of wall? or are the blades dull? if no to both of these, this product could become a hazard and a threat to children that may want this product, if made in small sizes. all the kid would have to do is get their hair, clothes, a object that will become like shrapnel, or in some other cases, their finger stuck in the watch. please consider this.

    • This is only a concept at this stage and I haven’t included glass on the model. If this concept were to be developed I imagine the turbine blades would be fully enclosed with glass front and back. Thanks for the feedback Mystery! 🙂

      • no problem. just putting it out there so no bad things happen and/or you guys get shut down somehow because of it. dont want it to happen.

  11. Ow come on! 116 shares in less that 24 hours but a 3.6 rating? Even optimistic Sam see’s that’s wrong. It was 4.0 six hours ago, even that was already underrated. I’m normally pretty quiet about this. If it where one of my watches, right now, I would just say ok, interesting, I’m not superman, can’t please everyone. I need to say SOMETHING now. At least for the protocol. I didn’t expect the mean forces we talked about that strong Peter. Noone can erase the likes and the comments and I still think this design will eat up the external blogs too.

Turbine watch!!! Woooooooshhhhhhhhh (airplane passes by the houses of the downraters and takes some windows as souvenir)

    • Hi Sam,

3.6 is a bit disapointing, and seems to be rather contradicted by the comments and shares.
It is hard to believe this landslide is purely down to peoples honest opinions!
Like you say hopefully the external blogs will support it and add to the lack of continuity!
I as always hope that TF see beyond the scores anyhow. I as ever appriciate your support and opinion Sam! 🙂

      Like

      • To be honest Im finding it more comical than depressing. Anyway 3.6 is a good score for me when you see how many 2s I’ve had for other designs! lol
Thanks for the comment Firdaus 🙂

      • I am sure they look beyond the scores as it’s easy to change your IP. Any idiot can look beyond this and I am sure TF is not dumb. I have seen some numbers that for sure look like they have been messed with. Not pointing any fingers but just take a look through the blog!

  12. This watch is pure genius. It’s an incredible and unique design. I’m curious though instead of a pull cord, what about a knob you can crank/rotate to get the blades to spin, similar to a wind up toy? Wonderful watch!

    Like

    • Yeah a crank handle would also work nice, Also a lever would work nice. I like the idea of the wearer being more involved than just pressing a button. The only advantage of the cord is that when it is in the fully home position the knob could be used for setting the time etc. Id be open to changes to these details if TF wanted to develop it further.
Thank you for the feedback Twix (great name btw) 🙂

    • You make an interesting point, maybe the rip cord just needs rotating 90degrees so when you pull the cord you pull it towards you, then it would be non-handed. Thanks for the feedback and the comment Joshua! 🙂

      • If you like this check out my Sputnik concept on my FB page (PF Design) click on my yellow name to go straight there. Sputnik uses a similar principle but in an analogue style and the rip cord is facing the user so again it is non-handed.
