Cryptic Digital Watch Design

Design submitted by Heather from the USA.

Heather has combined the idea of reading time clockwise with the idea of reading time digitally.

The display is simply digital, but it is so distorted, that at first glance it just looks like a maze.  You can read the digits by starting at the bottom digit, and reading clockwise.  The bottoms of the digits are at the center, and the tops are along the circumference.  There is a choice of either 24-hour mode, or AM/PM mode.  Colors can easily be changed, too.

This watch involves no counting at all, but still looks cryptic and cool.

  1. What a briliant idea! I was so confused at the beginning, tried to read the time and i could not get it, and then i read the manual.5 stars for tricking my brain. True tokyoflash expierience. This display has got many to offer with nice casing & colours. Still 5 stars for concept.

  2. Very clever! It had the tokyoflashy effect: first you cross eyes and get a head-ache, then you read the instructions and it is easy to read. And I like readable watches 😀 Case is ok, strap color layout is cool. Very good work!

  3. Nice work. This would be a great candidate for being able to change the color of the display. Love the way you read time on this. It truly is easy once you know the secret! Well done!

  4. This looks cool, but I’ve been re-reading the instructions and looking at the diagrams and I still can’t recognize the time.

  5. I tried to make my avatar an example of how to read the digit 2, but I don’t know if it’s big enough for you to see it. I can post a better image when I am home. 😉

  7. I would buy this watch in a second! Its cryptic, cool, and easy to tell time once you get the hang of it. Every minute is a geometric work of art. Putting a digital watch in the context of the traditional colockwise rotation is a simpley genius. This is one of the more unique creative designs I have seen in a long time.

  8. I needed to read the instructions a few times before I understood how to read it, but this is a very cool design and I would love to own such a watch. I hope this model gets produced for real!

  9. One of the coolest designs I’ve seen. Would definitely love to buy this watch–I hope it gets made. I love how, on the one hand (no pun intended), the individual digits once you understand them are so simply the normal numeric shapes we know but by virtue of the slightly skewed perspective made so unique and interesting, and on the other hand, the combined image of the whole set of numbers creates such cool maze-like patterns which appear as components taken from merely 3 concentric circles and the radial lines. These great visual qualities combined with the extremely creative concept of the fusion of the digital display with the clockwise rotation makes this an awesome artistic creation.

  17. the watch is really cool, and so is the concept.
I would totally but this watch if it came out SO MAKE IT TOKYOFLASH!
it would be really cool and even more marketable if you came out with different colors for the led lights and the wrist part(cool design on that). PINK, PINK, and other warm/tropical colors would be cool, even greens, blues, and purples!
Just an idea, but it would be cool if you could rotate the LED part so you didn’t have to turn your neck every time
    Keep making awesome watches, Heather

  25. Cool design Heather. I only have one small crit concerning the dot in the middle. You are already using a 24hr digital display so it is probably not necessary, perhaps you could make a variation that uses the dot space as a day indicator?

    Look forward to seeing more.

    • Thank you for your comment, Colored circle. You’re right that it would not be necessary for the 24-hour mode.
But actually, there are two different modes – AM/PM, or 24 hour mode. When the watch is set to 24 hour mode, the dot does not show up at all, as in the image shown for 20:36. When it is set to AM/PM mode, the dot is the PM indicator, as in the image shown for 3:42 PM.

  29. Wow, Heather. This watch is great. You have made so many great watches, but this is by far the best one. I think that the face of the watch should be able to turn on an axis so that people wont need to turn their heads to get the time. Maybe it can snap into place in the right side up position so it wont swivel around like a drunken fish when it doesn’t need to.
