(English) Aeon Transparent LCD watch resembles Alien Tattoo on your wrist.

(English) Design submitted by Sam from Germany.

Sam says: In the design process for my FOCUS watch I sketched for a concept called ALIEN TATTOO that uses the same way of stacking numbers. Despite the issues, that a transparent screen might bring, I liked the idea of overlapping the wrist with a cool ornamental display. This is how AEON came to being.

The display is a clear LCD screen that tells the the time with half-round numbers that are stacked upon each other. Two half-round numbers form a circle. The big one stands for the hours, the small one for the minutes. I’ve added some randomly changing sci-fi ornaments around the circles to emphasize the alien and techie look of the display.

For the watch, I chose a curvy frame that encases the clear display. I’m not sure how much space is needed for technology, but I gave the case some voluminous end parts, where the straps begin, to carry the circuits and the energy source. A USB-recharge would be wise here.

I made some color and material variants that bring various contrasts towards the different types of wrists out there. While the SINGULARITY goes best with a bright and smooth wrist, MERCURY tames the wildest jungle ;) The idea stays the same: a cool techno tribal tattoo on your wrist.

For the black-white model photo in the presentation I’m using a shot by Karl Lagerfeld for Vogue Germany’s February 2010 issue. It is an homage to the silent film Metropolis of 1920. I like the stylish sci-fi theme and the story-telling motif of this picture.

  2. avatar Krautesh Vakir より:

All i can say is I WANT ONE!!! 5/Y

  3. avatar Seth より:

Real neat design. If reasonably priced I’d definitely wear one of these. I really dig having a sci fi look, but find so few ways to do so without going too far. This is a lot more subtle.

  4. avatar Firdaus より:

Wow, this design is wild, my fantasy says it look like futuristic catholic missionary’s communication device, where the vatican already has a floating mother ship, and the apostles fighting vampires….

I think in real life the transparent lcd wouldn’t be practical, but as for commenting on this, I couldn’t complain your fantastic design, which is looking very futuristic and promising. 5* all the way, what else.

  5. avatar Ray より:

    great design!

  6. avatar dzign555 より:

Oh my god…this is absolutely sick!!!

    50 *!!!

  7. avatar dzign555 より:

    More numbers…hehehe!

  8. avatar Keiron より:

Love this! Frideus summed it up nicely. Looks like a futuristic relic with those digits, transparancy would be epic so hope somewhen in the not so distant future this can be made.

  9. avatar Leonard Lee Kah Khiong より:

It can be produced! During CES 2012, many company showed this transparent technology! Question is when can we get it on the market? Great work, Sam! Hopefully, this one will be the first one on market for watches! 5 Stars!

  10. avatar Pete より:

Ummm good old “GMTA” hehe, as you know Sam I also had a similar concept in my mind that never made it onto the computer. But it would never in a million years been as epic as this! Just looks beautiful! what more can I say? err congrats! :D 5/Y (definately no luck needed here! ;) )

  11. avatar Jason より:

DO WANT!!!! I really only had trouble recognizing the 7. But everything else is fantastic!

  12. avatar mushy より:

Cool design Sam. :) I think I’d find it a bit tricky to read with all the lines, but who cares when it looks this good. :) 5Y.

  13. avatar Heather より:

    in a word, spectacular! 5*/yes

  14. avatar Samukun より:

Thank you everybody for your comments and the support!

Firdaus, I think the practicality of any Tokyoflash watch could be doubted ;) I’m sure that the transparency is not everyone’s cup of tea but I think the functionality is given. I wish I could do research…

Leonard, I think if Tokyflash decide for such a watch, or especially for this one, it would be in a year when it could be bought. The bad thing with concepts is, people want it now but have to be disappointed.

Jason :) There is a trick: the number you don’t recognize, that’s the 7. But seriously, maybe I should let away the horizontal segment of the 7. Would be a) more correct (referring to traditional LCD numbers) and b) such a floating curve creates a nice diversion on the display.

Lloyd, corrrrect! That’s just the first impression. After while it’s a piece of pie.

Thanks again guys! (I figured out that “guys” refers to girls too.)

And downrater, you had a hard job the last days scratching down from 4.8 right?

I just realized that I made an unintentional plagiarism (no consequence, for not broadcast, oufff)
Sam is too strong and when I have good ideas, Sam has already found.
5 * / Yes, but I could put another note?

    • avatar Samukun より:

      Thank you so much Patrick!

et’s see how Tokyoflash sees it. If it’s different enough, they will post it. I know this, we call it GMTA (great minds think alike). Sometimes one is faster, somethimes another one is. Some ideas just scream to be made and sooner or later someone finds them. There are enough for everyone hehe. Good luck Patrick créatif!

I really like this, I missed out on a previous model since I just today heard about the company and these watches; they are amazing! I would really like to know where I can go to buy this; online? In the store? This is a really cool, please let me know if this can still be bought. Thank you.

    • avatar Samukun より:

      Hi Xander!

Thank you for your interest! Here we are in a design blog with dreams and suggestions. Sometimes a watch get’s chosen to become reality. That’s always kept secret until suddenly an announcement comes. 14 watches from this blog have been made real in the last 2.5 years since the blog exists. 7 are inspired by fans and another 7 are pure Tokyoflash designs. People vote and comment here, say how much they like a watch and sometimes say what they think would be a possible improvement. So right now I can recommend the shop for cool real watches (hit “WATCHES” up there) and cross fingers here and support the designs you like.

really nice design. would definitely buy

  18. avatar dzign555 より:

Downrater will need to post 1 star 50 million times from 50 million different IP addresses using sophisticated IP masking technology in order to bring the rating of this watch down a mere 0.1 points – it’s that cool!

    • avatar Samukun より:

I think it’s more in the hundreds than in the millions but I see your point ;) Well he can’t change Tokyoflash’s thoughts anyway and people’s feelings. At least two watches with a <4* rating have been produced – that proves it. But if one has too much time to kill, I guess it's like a game. Others play Farmville and kick carrots instead hehe. Thanks for your words DZ!

    • avatar dzign555 より:

You are wrong, Sam – it’s in the millions, because it’s way cool! :)

      • avatar Firdaus public より:

You are wrong too, because hater wasn’t very active lately, and I suspect there’s multiple haters to worry than suspect code no.1, plus we couldn’t blame everything to haters… If there’s room for improvement, keep improving…. And haters know what TF can do and couldn’t do to track them…. unless we see haters do things by our own eyes, there’s chance we blame the wrong guy… and haters keep being cunning and anonymous…. I already suggested an update to the gdstar rating system to TF (suggested rating for every comment, no comment, no vote)… TF said will take note… thank you! Nevertheless, TF has proven the haters fail, agreed, but that manipulated rating numbers will remain scar to one’s design even if its considered to be manufactured… haters still can enjoy smiling cynically…. dammit go play Farmville and kick carrots instead hehe.

+5* to this design from Firdaus’ office ;-)

see, I rated twice already lol, so if I hit yes, that means I’ll buy two of these….

      • avatar Samukun より:

Thanks for the words Fir, and for confirming the vote :)

      • avatar dzign555 より:

Yeah…downraters…go and play Farmville. Errr…what’s Farmville? LOL ;)

  19. avatar Laszlo より:

    I need one of these!

  20. avatar Jordan from Canada より:

    This isn’t a watch; it’s art!
Great idea putting the buttons on the front of the face rather than the side. Subtle and classy :)
    5* and a yes, naturally.

  21. avatar Lou より:

I need it! I’ll wait 1 year if its necessary and pay more than 200$ for that! Really the best concept i ever saw!

  22. avatar xian より:

I gotta say, Sam–how do you do it? I’ve never seen an artist as prolific as you turn out so many top-quality designs. Do you sleep, and if so do you design in your dreams? I’ve viewed all TF blog pages and consistently dig what you do.

    • avatar Samukun より:

      Wow thank you so much!

It’s a little passion. Seeing something abstract in my mind becoming visual feels nice. Dreams are actually part of it. In relaxed situations the best ideas come. Better don’t force it. And Scott Galloway (who made the concept for the Kisai Seven) said it nicely once – He just thought about what he would like to wear in his wrist. Exactly. And here I found a great platform for my dreams.

  23. avatar Makkovik より:

An amazing design. I like the overall look. My fav is “antares”.

The next step would be to remove the screen and having “floating” digits made from laser lights going from the inner part of the case.

  24. avatar Samukun より:

Thank you everybody for the nice comments and your support! It’s one of my most utopic concepts but I tried to keep it feasable. It’s probably in the middle ;)

Let’s see what the future brings!
