Turbine LED Watch Design

(English) Design submitted by Peter from UK.

Peter figured out a way to tell time using an image of a jet engine.

To tell the time, you simply pull the cord out of the bezel.  This spins the turbine blades.  The kinetic energy created powers the LEDs mounted on one of the blades which creates the illusion of the time floating in mid air.

I like it, Peter. Very cool idea…I had wanted to find a way to apply the same idea (spinning LEDs – I have a toy that can show Happy Birthday when you spin it – that’s what gave me the idea).. anyway, i didn’t find a way to make it work. Yours is very neat. Pretty cool-looking. Not feminine enough for me to wear myself, but 5* for creativity and a nice visual! ;)

Not new idea, but great you bring it into wrist watch. Pull the cord to spin the turbine, sounds interesting compared to spin it using electricity which consume massive power. This is real gadget and will be hot cakes sold at thinkgeek. Cheers!

    • avatar Pete より:

Yeah the principle has been used for years in clocks, usually with a side to side movement, that was why I was confident it would work in a wrist watch. It would be nice if the power could be supplied kinetically and the pulling of the cord is more user interactive than just pressing a button. Thanks for the support! :)

I see this watch spreading on the external websites like a virus. It’s fantastic!

+ this time literal is perfect. The turbine theme is visually and practically translasted perfectly into a wrist watch
+ the cord pulling. It’s a cool gesture on one hand. On the other hand it’s a preferable technology, creating light by human power!
+ the glossy white. Oh yeah, this airplane feeling is welcome

You maybe need a covering glass or you might puree insects ;)

I’m all excited about this one. It would be (or already is?) a joy for TF to do research for this I think. It’s really a wonderful example of an unusual watch. 5*/YES without any hesitation. Good luck to you Bro!

hehe, when I started submitting concepts to TF for the first couple of weeks I was litterally submitting a concept a day. I have slowed down a bit since then trying to improve the quality.

are the blades covered by glass or some kind of wall? or are the blades dull? if no to both of these, this product could become a hazard and a threat to children that may want this product, if made in small sizes. all the kid would have to do is get their hair, clothes, a object that will become like shrapnel, or in some other cases, their finger stuck in the watch. please consider this.

Ow come on! 116 shares in less that 24 hours but a 3.6 rating? Even optimistic Sam see’s that’s wrong. It was 4.0 six hours ago, even that was already underrated. I’m normally pretty quiet about this. If it where one of my watches, right now, I would just say ok, interesting, I’m not superman, can’t please everyone. I need to say SOMETHING now. At least for the protocol. I didn’t expect the mean forces we talked about that strong Peter. Noone can erase the likes and the comments and I still think this design will eat up the external blogs too.

    • avatar Pete より:

      Hi Sam,

3.6 is a bit disapointing, and seems to be rather contradicted by the comments and shares.
It is hard to believe this landslide is purely down to peoples honest opinions!
Like you say hopefully the external blogs will support it and add to the lack of continuity!
I as always hope that TF see beyond the scores anyhow. I as ever appriciate your support and opinion Sam! :)

This watch is pure genius. It’s an incredible and unique design. I’m curious though instead of a pull cord, what about a **** you can crank/rotate to get the blades to spin, similar to a wind up toy? Wonderful watch!

    GD Star Rating

    • avatar Pete より:

Yeah a crank handle would also work nice, Also a lever would work nice. I like the idea of the wearer being more involved than just pressing a button. The only advantage of the cord is that when it is in the fully home position the **** could be used for setting the time etc. Id be open to changes to these details if TF wanted to develop it further.
Thank you for the feedback Twix (great name btw) :)

You make an interesting point, maybe the rip cord just needs rotating 90degrees so when you pull the cord you pull it towards you, then it would be non-handed. Thanks for the feedback and the comment Joshua! :)

Two weeks left. Look at the success the watch had in the first two weeks. The 3.6 aren’t justified. Yes, I’m talking to the one(s) who rate(s) down here and on other designs again and again. You cannot take away the success of this design. You are wasting your life, you know it. You are a little sick, if you gain pleasure from devaluing other people’s work. Maybe you’re jealous, but this bad karma won’t bring you success anywhere. Stay away from the blog if you haven’t any constructive contribution to share.

I love the clean THX-1138 look, but I’d love a cold, gritty, steel, terminator styled version. They used my favorite jet ever, the A-10 Thunderbolt II, in Terminator: Salvation and the this reminded me of the turbines on the A-10 and the futuristic red light elements of the Terminators (red vision, LED’s, etc.) Put the gritty chrome/steel elements of all that skyNET stuff and the A-10′s together and I’d love you forever.. no h0m0… you gotta pay first. :P

A very unique idea indeed…da analoguez and da digitalz…n even da LED watchez are (somewhat) something I can safely say that we’re (almost) “used to” now…da idea of makin da time “float”…superb! I’ve seen something similar a looooong time ago…where da person used a motorized fan that’d display specific text once da fan waz spinnin at full speed n I thought it waz a pretty cool gadget…n now a watch that displayz time in da same fashion iz just “thinkin out of da box”…However, I would suggest something to be done about da cord…I don’t think many of us would like to pull da cord every time u wanna see what time it iz…n may be add a feature or two…like da date or date and day may be..Overall, good idea :)

    GD Star Rating

  33. avatar Fr0zen より:

Oh…one more thing…I think u should add something to cover the bladez..probably not glass on both endz..az that might create a problem..may be a foggy effect…so may be something like a mesh…may be at da back or on da sidez…to help releaze da air ;)

    GD Star Rating
    loading...
    • avatar Pete より:

Hi Fr0zen, thats a comprehensible amount of feed back! The extra features would be not problem, date, animation etc. It would be possible to do away with the cord and power the blades electrically, but this will use a lot of power hence the reason for the cord. Alternatively it could be a lever or a button you “pump” to spin the blades. I think that if it were developed it would be necessary to have a glass or like you say mesh cover to stop things getting into the blades. You might be right that it may need a mesh or vents on the back to allow any pressure built up by the blades to escape. Thanx for da comment! :D
