Design submitted by Patrick from France.
This watch design is a traditional analog watch with a red hemisphere to indicate the hour and a blue one to indicate minutes.
Through a plasma system, both hemisphere electrodes become active and by touching the glass with a finger, streamers flash to show the time.
There is a button to set the time and another to enable or disable the plasma system. The watch is also USB rechargeable.
Give it a badass strap and you’ve got a winner. 5/5 Would buy. I want to mention that the points that stick out on the face are pretty awesome and would love to see them kept if this gets produced.

Wouldn’t you need a lot more energy than an average watch could produce to make that happen?
LikeLike
probably, but even if they could only make the battery last 48hrs i’d still buy it.
as long as it was USB rechargable (300 charges) it would still last about 1and1/2 years before you would have to replace the battery.

Hi Lamondray, a single USB cable connected to a computer for charging, it already exists for plasma balls!

Stunning design Patrick.
5* although I doubt this is possible to produce (power; safety; clarity reasons)

awesome concept 5/5 but i think an lcd touch simulation would be more likely from a technical perspective, but that would radically change the design.

Nobert, if I had seen this design, I would never have designed this watch?
Jobby excuse me, but we have had the same idea I had not seen your project before, sorry.

There is nothing wrong with a redesign, It has the same theme, that is all 😀 its cool hehehe
LikeLike
Same theme, but very different also. In particular, it is possible to read this watch without activating the plasma, which it isn’t in Jobby’s design. That means this one can be much lower power, and will last a lot longer.

DeStaal indeed this watch has two states to choose from.

Thank you all for this great score with your votes.
I want to apologize to Jobby who had the same idea before me, a few months ago and malheureusment I did not know his project.
My joy is bitter, but I assume that these votes are especially good at drawing, but to the design and it flatters me much, anyway.

I wouldn’t worry about it Patrick, its easily done. I’ve got a concept that I submitted a few weeks back that has some ressemblance to an old one of yours. I hadn’t spotted it untill after I had submitted mine. Hopefully it is different enought! 🙂
LikeLike
Yes patrick, do not worry…I designed many watches and then realised soon after that someone already made one like it! Its fine 😀
LikeLike
No it’s not fine. What’s going on lately? I have a deja-vu every week. I understand, that there is no mean intention behind all the watches that look similar to existing watches or concepts. That’s is fine. But that tokyoflash posts it, althought they said, they want designs that are different, is not fine. This one looks pretty similar to me. Ok, this one beats the “original” in several points, but it was up to the first watch to be improved. If there will be a plasma watch, the other guy deserves 50% of the money.
LikeLike
Hmmm yes I understand you Aphonso, Tokyoflash states in the blog “is your design totally different from anything else featured on the blog”…but still sometimes they accept designs that are very similar to others, I think they just like the concepts alot so they want people to see variations of a certain concept.

Even without the plasma I just love the watch, with the clean white and red and blue balls, its so fresh.
and the plasma makes it 10x more cooler, at night this would be amazing. 5 stars and yes xD

Without the plasma the watch looks like a small planetarium. That is nice. I’m not a fan of the big hollow glass dome tho. More flat would suit me better. In the darkness, the watch unfolds it’s full potential. I’m not sure how it looks in daylight. A question, why is the background bright when deactivated, but dark when activated? Light plus light is light i think.
LikeLike
Hi Aphosno, thank you for your comments.
The glass is concave to better see the effect and the plasma background light and dark is the same. May need to use a dark background for a possible production, but after a few tests?

Alphosno, I totally agree with you!

I’m a bit double minded here. If we can submit similar designs, this blog would get boring after some time. I also think, there has to be a slight restriction about double posts. On the other hand, the best one wins. Or the faster one? The “original” as I also like to call it, wasn’t very convincing to me. This version does. Why? I let myself influence by what I see too much I guess. I’m not sure. I also have a plasma design in my sketch book but I was too slow so I kept it. I even did research about feasability – good luck on this 😉 Maybe I should throw out my concept. It’s different enough I hope. We will see, bwahahaha.
Yes Apho, light + light = light. The plasma effect would be weaker in daylight, but you can go in a dark corner with the girl you want to impress, hehehe. Or there is a black background in the first place. Good, the watch is readable without plasma. In the darknes, this is probably the best light function of a wristwatch ever seen in this universe… let’s say solar system. I also see the planetarium here 😀 Make the blue one big and the red one small – Earth and Mars 😀

I agree no one wants to see copies of ideas, I don’t think that happened here!
I always google my idea first and have a quick scan of the earlier submissions on TF but I have missed two concepts that have simularities to my concepts that I have submitted (I hope mine are different enough) it is easily done.
I do agree that TF should maybe restrict similar designs (even if this means my two concepts don’t get on) to keep it fresh!

for the technical issues (now that i m out of office) here are my toughts:
– the bulb contains a heaten low pressure noble gas (the plasma) it has to be “gasproof” so the movement has to be encapsuled inside otherwise you’ll have plasma leaking from the hands axis.
-the movement has to be mechanic, cause i suppose a quartz movement wont appreciate the plasma and it has to be mainly made of non conductive parts so in this case ceramic. thousands dollars… and we still have to find a way to set the time in a gasproof way but this is not really an issue with a linear system.
– the electric connection between the hands, can be managed with a circular rail connection thats a positive point
– plasma is created with high voltage you need a transformator (big), you also need a good battery but by luck the amperage is low.
so the result sofar is a big and very expansive watch
an other way to do this would be to have the electrodes outside the bulb like this
http://hackaday.com/2011/08/18/high-voltage-plasma-lamp-is-also-tasteful-steampunk/
or to make it virtual with a spheric touchscreen, the tech exists

This will never be manufactured. How can you put a transformer strong enough to run a plasma display on your wrist? The watch would have to weigh a kilo.

Tom, there is already another system of lightning without plasma (with the same effect), in very small size, the plasma is not essential.

Nice – nice – nice! This is one that must go into production. One extremely small change that I think I’d prefer… while the minute indicator should continue to sweep around the face, what if the hour indicator snapped into place for each hour and then held that position until the next hour, at which time it would again quickly move to the next hour position then hold again, etc? If you like that concept and if the watch is made available, the idea is free to for you to use. After all, it is such a minor tweak. Normally, I want a watch to also indicate the date (and automatically track months and leap years and all that). But I cannot think of any way that feature could be worked into your design without severely lessening its impact. So, overall, your concept is ready to rock. TF, do it!

Thankyou for the translation, I just about understood the french version.
I don’t think it would move far even if people gave negative votes, becasue you have had many votes.
It is only when you have had a few votes that a negative one has a dramatic effect.
That aside its a very desirable concept that apeals to the majority so I would be very supprised if the score went down.
I think the only issue with this submission is whether it is technaically possible and only TF will no the answer to that. So we will have to wait and hope TF finds a way! 🙂
