Sam says: This project ran under the working title “chameleon” just like my Canvas watch concept did. I have fun, creating adaptable concepts. It’s a contemporary feature because it’s fun to customise. Canvas was a relatively high tech version of the chameleon idea. This watch – Inch – is a haptical and simple version. One inch, that is the width of a strap in any flexible material which you can stick into the watch and therefore adapting it to your taste.

Now he has updated the idea with a version that tells the time in a single step.

Firdaus says: This analogue watch design is inspired by nature aspect of Gaia.
Time telling is completely straight forward analogue. Smallest hand indicates hour, the bigger hand indicates minute and the biggest hand indicates second.

Anders says: I was trying to find something new, thinking about ratios of rotation for each hand. An image of three sprockets came to mind, each with a ratio of 60:61 relative to the one before. Thus the minute hand rotates one revolution more than the second hand every minute.

A very pleasing atheistic to this watch we felt. Although not the norm for TF designs, we couldn’t resist the satisfying feeling that flip action would give as the minutes topple over.

Peter says : I wanted to come up with a time telling method that involves combining two symbols or shapes to create digital numbers. The result is a simple rotating disc that when combined with a viewing window shows a single digit.

Sam’s initial idea was to create an ever changing display which works with interference (short term change coming from the second hand) and color change (long term change coming from the hour and minute hands). Halftone is actually a technique used in printing. It works like an LED screen – it simulates any color by just using a few. The difference from a LED screen is that it’s not limited to a rectangular grid. The few colors of cyan, magenta, yellow (and black too) are applied in tiny dots. From a certain distance, this dot pattern cannot be seen anymore and the basic colors seem to mix to the final motif. Continue reading
