Devindh says: I called this design ‘Ebi’ because the eventual design reminded me of a lobster. The idea stemmed from my exploration of e-paper. I wanted to incorporate laser cut pieces of e-paper into a design, as this display technology lends itself to custom shapes.

I was inspired by an older blog entry posted by Tokyoflash that used two colors of LEDs to count the time: http://www.tokyoflash.com/blog/2010/02/time-to-streamline/ The Retro-bot LED watch concept is meant to be similar to the classic Tokyoflash watches, but instead of using counting to tell the time, the display shows a distorted version of the digital time.

Leonard says: Recently I study about emoticons of digital display. It remains me of tamagotchi, a digital pet in 90’s. When i look at how the tamagotchi’s pet face expression, it give me an idea on designing this watches – Watchme.

Sylvie says : I wanted to go outside the box by avoiding symmetry. I wanted to do something modern and ‘chic’.

Heather says: After designing the digits for my n-gon display concept, I found that I could make digits similar to those that would stack well, since they have no middle.
I thought it would be fun to have the time read from the inside-out, since it allows a changing look to the display every minute, and because it allows for a descriptive and catchy name, “Inside-out”. Continue reading

Heather & Peter say: Artist Pablo Picasso was one of the pioneers of the 20th century avant-garde art movement called “Cubism”, where objects are broken up, analysed, and re-assembled in an abstracted form. The digits created for this watch design were inspired by his work.

Heather says: I wanted to develop some minimalistic digits that would appear cryptic, yet once learned are quite easy to recognise. I accomplished this by arranging various sizes of rectangular tiles to give the feel of classic digits. I call this display “MOSAIC”. Continue reading
