Magnetic Liquid Design Tells The Time

I don’t think we have ever seen anything like this before – a very imaginative use of science. Here’s what Karim says about his design:

“The watch runs with ferrofluid, a very sensitive magnetic liquid. The hidden needles reflects the shape of the gears. They are a tribute to mechanical watches. A Watch Design That Uses Words Instead of Numbers

Tokyoflash Says: This watch design is in fact very simple to read at a glance – when you know how. We like that the LEDs light up the individual words in order so that you can follow the written numbers to calculate the time. Maybe it would be fun to have some different typefaces or even different LED colors to indicate hours, groups of 10 minutes and single minutes.

Water Watch With Accelerometer

Tokyoflash Says: We love the idea of accelerometer in a watch and having liquid graphics sloshing around on your wrist. This idea really has potential! If you splash the display around though, how can you tell the time? Well, im sure there would be some nifty way to keep a marker of some kind – perhaps its oil & water, so the lower level doesn’t slosh too much and the liquid above is just for fun rather than time telling.

The time level could be a physical barrier between the oil & water and when you move the watch around the two liquids bubble into each other, but you can still see the line between them, like a kind of lava lamp snow storm  – lots of possibilities im sure!

以下はTokyoflashのコメントです。加速度センサーと液体をイメージしたインターフェイスの組み合わせはとても面白く、可能性を感じます。ただ、現状のままでは、現在時刻の位置に水位が定まらず、読みづらそうですね。例えば、オイルと水を組み合わせたような、二層の表示にするアイデアはどうでしょうか。下の層は現在時刻を表示したまま、上の層だけ液体のように動くようにすると、この問題は解決できそうです。

Drive, the Argentinian concept design.

A concept watch design that combines steel and leather creating a contrast. The time is shown traditionally with analogue hands and there are various dials and cogs to add interest.

VOLTure measures your electric charge.

This concept watch design is inspired by the look of voltmeter. It shows hours 3, 5, 7 and 9 with the dial in the center, and +1, +2 exact hours with the dial in left bottom corner. Minutes are shown simply by small digital display in right bottom corner. When the button on the front of the case is pushed, a brief animation illuminates the display before the time is shown.

Despite the claims of the page title, the watch doesn’t really measure any electric charge, it just looks like it could.

Interesting thought though, how many people would actually be interested in knowing the static charge they build up during the day?

Pulse. For those who need reassuring they are still alive.

The interface on this concept watch design is like the display of an ECG showing electrical activity. The time is shown very simply; hours 1-12 on the top line, 10 minute groups , 10-50 on the center line and single minutes 1-9 on the lower line. The high and low points of each line indicate each hour and minute.

It’s quite a novel idea to apparently be checking your heart rate  when simply glancing at the time. Just remember that at 1:00 AM, its only a watch you are not really about to flatline!

Time Cube watch design

Based on the concept of a 3d cube image within the display, each visible side of the cube shows an element of time. The left section of the blue side shows the first digit of the hour (0, 1 or 2). The second digit of the hour is shown on the top of the cube in yellow (0, 1-9). The two right hand columns on the blue section show the first digit of the minutes (0-5) and the red side shows single minutes 1-9. You can see an example at the bottom that shows 15:55.

Diagonal brings Binary watches back into fashion.

The interface of this watch design displays hours in yellow read diagonally from top right to bottom left: 1, 2, 4, 8, 16. A combination of numbers indicating the current hour. Minutes are displayed in red from bottom right to top left 1, 2, 4, 8, 16, 32. A combination of numbers indicating the current minute. Grooves on the strap match the lines running across the face.

Of course the concept behind this is Binary time telling, but in a wonderfully fashionable way. Chic geek I think they call it, but anyway, theres no denying its an attractive display with a mathematically minimal way to tell the time.

Motif, deceptively simple watch design

The display uses various shapes to represent time. Triangles on the right hand side show hours in binary form, for example; 1 + 4 = 5 o’clock. 5 groups of 10 minutes are shown around the edge with green lights and single minutes are shown in red in between. There is also a flashing indicator for seconds in the upper left part of the display. This concept would have changeable covers so that you can customize your watch.

Watch the Rainbow. 2 red lights, 4 orange lights and 6 yellow lights represent 1 hour each. 8 green lights represent 4 minutes each, 6 blue lights represent 3 minutes each, 4 indigo lights represent 2 minutes each and 2 violet lights represent 1 minute each.
