Geoglyph watch inspired by crop circles

Peter says: This is “Geoglyph” a watch inspired by the phenomenon of crop circles. These elaborate geometric patterns (however created) can be as beautiful as they are mysterious. They also lend themselves to an unusual watch display.

The time is told in a variation of a 12/12/4 format arranged around an analogue shaped display. The circles placed at the hour positions are made up of a rings of 12 x 5min blocks and 4 single minute blocks. The display fills up in a kinda of analogue fashion, when a ring is complete it denotes a complete hour and it continues to the next. I have varied the size of the circles which also alows for extra makers in some of the centres, they could denote modes, notifications or alarms and chimes etc, and there is a PM indicator in the centre of the display.

I have chosen just to show the basic time, but if a more complicated look was deemed attractive, other information like seconds and date could be displayed (like Rogue touch)

This display layout would also suit the time telling method as per my “Supernova” and “Vector” concepts using the rings to show 15 single min blocks and the 4 blocks inside being groups of 15 mins.

This design would suit most display types like LCD, LED or e-paper as my examples hopefully show.

Although the inspiration for this design  has  paranormal or spacey connotations the watch has a modern and geometric feel. So hopefully it will appeal to a wide range of people from UFO spotters to arty types and everyone in between.

The crop circle like layout and unusual time telling format sets this design apart form others 🙂

  1. Great selection of images – varied straps & styles – it really helps for everyone to identify with something. Also the soft style straps could be swapped easily for a mood update.

    The time telling is quite unusual, it took me a while to grasp what was happening.
    So, at 6 o’clock the entire display will ‘fill up’ to the 6 o’clock position (regardless of what the mins might be) & then the minute reading will take place at that position. That is a cool way of combining both circles.

    The whole concept of ‘crop circle inspired time’ is brilliant & could probably generate a whole range of watches.

      I have tried to do a variety so hopefully something will gel with people. I did contemplate doing a more conventional strap should the crop-circley one be a bit much for some but I’m sure people can imagine what it would look like easily enough.

      The time telling is quite similar to my “mono” watch from a while back but instead of one hand with the 5min blocks and single blocks in it, they are all left on show as time goes by.
      Yeah the crop-circles just fill up as time goes by, so like you say 6:00 would be full to the 6 o’clock position, then the 7 o’clock position would start to fill up thereafter and so on. The lines in between the circles simply link them together and give rough 30min increments in the process but aren’t strictly needed from a time telling perspective.

  2. Been waiting for this one to arrive to both understand how to read it and because you commented on the similarity to my “Ripples” design (yes, they both have circles, part circles and dots, but thankfully very different time telling).
    I love it! Another winner, Pete.
    The hours are easy, but cool to use the two circuits for this. At first I thought the 5-minutes a bit challenging counting the blocks, but then realised they were in analogue positions too, so easy. And interesting straps too, although would need smaller links as you go around to enable fitting to a variety of wrist sizes.
    Another instant purchase and a well deserved 5y.

    • Cheers Nev, Yeah the simularities are only in loose style rather than any real content. I only mentioned it at the time because I submitted this only hours before your design hit the blog, and in the early hours of the morning I had to sqint to realise it wasnt mine lol.
      Yeah the time telling is really intuative when you get the hang of it, but will make no sense to the casual onlooker 😉

  3. Please get on kickstarter. People on there like myself love to fund innovative engineering. Right now there is a butter knife on kickstarter that has raised $53,000 dollars and I’m one of those backers. I was literally going to buy a watch from Tokyoflash and didn’t because of the fact that I like your designs more and I’m waiting to see if they come out. Just go on there an search “watch” on the search bar, go to advanced and click successful. You’ll see all of these simple watch projects get funded. There are some that have raised $470,000 USD.

    I personally love your Nemesis, Kisai 528, Reticle, Botiodea, and honestly about %95 of all of your designs. I’m not a fan of this one but I do like the creativity as with all of your concepts. I’m sort of glad that your watches aren’t real yet because I have a GSX-R 750 that needs new fairings but I would not have a problem spending over $500 on one of your watches.

    • Cheers for the comment Michael! I like the idea of kickstarter but the trouble is you do need to have technical knowledge and the right contacts to take an idea through to a makeable product. The funding is only half the battle. Most of the projects on kickstarter are pretty resolved and the funding is the last part of the jigsaw.
      If I had the knowledge, contacts and maufacturing facilities lined up I would love to put a project on there.

  4. Geoglyph is yet another great concept it looks like a watch straight out the science fiction universe of Doctor Who perhaps a timepiece worn by the time lord himself. Fantastic work 5 Stars.

  6. Very cool design Pete me ol mucker! I was sketching for a similar watch but couldn’t decide upon which of the numerous crop circles out there to choose from. Looks like you’ve nailed it with this one. 5/Y

    • Yeah its tricky to decide on a layout that the majority of people would associate with crop circles as they can vary so widely. As long as people can see the link we’re half way there. Cheers for the support and fingers crossed your right! 😀

  7. I like the strap as much as the watch! Not sure any of it makes me think of crop circles, but I love it anyway. If the strap is kept in the final product, I’d get one of these.

    • Crop-circles or un-explained glyphs can be a wide and diverse selection of shapes, so what I might recognise or interpret as crop-circley might not be same others. So dont worry if you have other associations. As long as it appeals I am a happy chap. Im glad you like the strap and overall design, its always great to see a ladies perspective on the blog.
