Swarm watch keeps you in sync with the hive (update)

Design submitted by Andrew from the UK.

Andrew says: The following wrist watch  concept is a 23-11-4 LED analogue / binary LED display. That uses 38 Hexagonal “Cell” Key Pad Increments. Constructed in both metal watch cases / bracelets or Leather Straps with a multiple Color LED selector. The user can change how this watch animates by pressing the screen lock at one of three positions. See examples provided.

The Alarm, Charge, Date,Time, is display using a series  of Hexagonal Key Pad “Cells” arranged around the display in a spiral dials. The number of LED “Cells” lit represents the the current time in 23-11-4 format.

Naturalists, Biologists with an interest in insects.

Screen Lock: Flat: Analogue Spiral,Required Increments light up in a clockwise spiral. Pushed out: Glow required Increments all glow on / off at once. Press In Fully / Unlock (Set): all Increments Light up. The Selected Remain “Cell’s” un-lit user then presses the current or previous /next Cell. This means the user can operate this watch with a single Finger.

UPDATE: This update contains changes to the layout of the display plus different symbols added to each incremental key  dial:

Hours: 1-23 / Months: 1: Jan-12:Dec,  Hexagonal dot within a Hexagonal Ring.

5 Minute: 5-55 / Days: 5-30 Groups: Hexagonal Rings. Single Minutes / Days: 1-4.

Insect themed / striped Bracelet colors / materials.

Both the Leather Straps & bracelet LED Colors  are all interchangeable with those in the “Swarm” examples  & the Bracelets used for” Swarm: Buzz” editions .

I call this update: Swarm: Buzz.

  1. Attractive hex theme & good to see a 24hr mode.

The diagrams could do with a little more explanation as it took me a long time to work out which lights were 11/4
    for example the black/yellow date image (Aug 8th) looks like 3 lights together + 1 light ~ but it is actually indicating 5 + 3 = 8
Maybe size, markings or colour could be used to define the 3 areas of 24-11-4

    • Thanks for the latest Posting of: Swarm, TF. The Hexagonal Cell First Outer dial dial Hours /Months: 1-23. 5 Minutes / Day Groups are arranged in a Horse Shoe shape, with 4 Cells: Single / Days in the center. Marking / symbols on the Cell could work really well or perhaps a triple color display could be used to differentiated each of the Time Increments: Red: Hour / Months 1-23, Green: 5 Minute / Days, Blue: Single Minutes / Days.

      • I would like to thank you TF for posting my update to swarm: Swarm: Buzz. I am more than pleased that you decided it was worthy of publication. Furthermore hope it address the issues or concerns with the layout / grouping & reading of LED’s “Cells”.

  2. Took me a while to get it. Made harder by the first image being unset cells to read it, whereas the other are the opposite.
I like the concept, but think you could make changes to ease the reading. One in particular would be to separate the 1-minute cells from the 5-minute ones somehow – it is hard to remember the that only outer ones are 5s, but they seem to blur together.
A good idea that just needs some tweaking. Good luck.

  3. I have to agree with Nev. the layout of the cells looks very nice but makes the time telling on the tricky side. Either the cells need to be more obviously grouped/separate dot different colours should be used for different increments. Much potential here tho with a couple of tweaks. Best of luck sir! 😀

  4. Hi Andrew, I like the hexagonal shapes, but I do not quite understand the operation, of this project?
Simplification would be, I think, useful?
    5 / Y, for the encouragement.

    • Thanks I for the your support for “Swarm” Patrick I realize that the style & layout of the concept can be a little bit difficult to follow to being with & other designers have suggest altering the arrangement / styling of the “Cell” incremental key. I have been busy trying to create a updated version of “Swarm” to address these issues & I am now ready to Submit it. Hopefully you will it Soon. Cheers for the 5 Star Vote as Well.

  5. The updates are much easier to read than the original. The different cell types work well.
Would still need to learn where each of the single minutes are positioned to be able to read it when in the mode shown on the purple version, but that wouldn’t be hard.
I’m obviously too boring to cope with the bright colours on the straps, so would want more muted colours – would choose the Flying Black Ant version (black with silvery wings). 🙂
Great update and definitely worth a 5y (I held off voting until your update got through). Good luck.

    • Thanks Patrick, I added symbols to the incremental “Cell” keys to make this watch easier to read: Hexagonal Rings & Hexagonal Dots Hours 1-23 / Months 1: Jan-12: Dec, Hexagonal Rings 5 Minute / Day Groups & Hexagonal Dots 1-4 Single Minutes / Days. The brightly colored bracelets / cases featured in the: Swarm: Buzz, examples are interchangeable with the fake leather straps / metal Bracelets featured in the original: Swarm, watch.
