Exostrusion LED watch diffuses the time.

Peter says: I had an idea for a simple LED watch using inspiration from the rear diffusers sported by modern performance cars. These diffusers are often elaborate looking extruded forms with various fins and facets. I decided this inspiration could create a nice display frame. “Exostrusion” was the result.

The time is told by LEDs arranged in four quadrants, the top two quadrants display the hours and the lower two the minutes. The quadrants are divided into the appropriate number of segments by an extruded form. The time can be displayed in 12hr and 24hr formats with the centre segment acting as a AM/PM indicator. This display layout would also allow for a phased digital time telling mode. The time and modes are controlled by subtle soft touch controls mounted in the strap, highlighted by two indents.

This design has a retro sci-fi industrial look that may appeal to people who are fans of games and film. It may also appeal to petrol heads who can relate to the original inspiration.

The almost waffle like extruded form that frames and divides the LEDs separates this design from others.

    You are also converting me to phased digits – don’t normally like them, but you are producing numbers that I love to look at!

  10. Great design Pete (Sorry for late comment!)

    I didn’t know what a rear diffuser was, so I had to look it up. To me it looks rather like some alien bio-structure, a cross section of a tube delivering green juice to vital organs!

    It’s a fascinating layout which looks good on or off. The 2 time modes is a valuable touch to please everyone.
    I particularly like the 24 hour option.

    As Nev mentioned, some places use 24:36, others 00:36 – strangely in Japan its not unusual to see 28:36 too – ha ha. Many late night bars/cafes have a sign to say OPEN 21:00 ~ 28:00 😉

      My designs rarely end up looking like the original inspiration, hopefully that’s because they evolve and become their own entity, rather than me just not being able to stick with a theme! lol

  11. Great images Pete! I wouldn’t have seen the car-related inspiration if you hadn’t pointed it out, but that’s a good thing in my book. If inspiration is taken too literally I think there’s a danger of gimmickry. No such danger here, I think it’s safe to say. The angles in the face (being an obtuse pyramid) work wonderfully. =)

    I really like the look and style of it, but somehow it still doesn’t scream ‘buy me!’ Of course, few designs actually do that (I’m more into seeing what cool stuff other people come up with than looking for something to buy, to be honest), and this is certainly not far off the mark. Very good work, mate. Best of luck!

      Gawd…if you “a car knowledgeable person” don’t see the diffuser element then nobody will! lol
      But like you say that might not be a bad thing as it could have worked out a bit cheesy.
      I must admit I’m more of a watch voyeur that cereal collector. That said some designs would look so much better in the flesh if they ever made reality that you never know. I think also that we are all so spoilt by some of the epic-ness that graces these pages that regular watches are very boring to us now.
      So TF needs to make more blog designs to fill the void! Cheers again! 😀
