Sam & Peter say: When Pete’s Bio-Metric fingerprint watch concept showed up in the blog, I was like nooooooooo because I had some display tests ready by then – great minds think alike! No other fingerprint concept has been made since then (2011!) so I took my drafts and showed them to Pete. I thought, if there is a new fingerprint watch concept, he should be involved. Pete said yes in perfect english so he and I came up with some ideas for a watch.

We were happy at first but the next ideas turned out to be better so the watch developed and the display with it. Pete’s final idea was completely convincing so we’re now proud to present the new Fingerprint coloured epaper watch concept.

Yes you read right: coloured epaper! The watch can be super thin and curved, the display can be always on and is clearly visible in all angles. How the colours come into play we’re not sure. Maybe a colour film on top or coloured particles? Being touch sensitive would be probably too expensive so we suggest a classic button control. If two touch areas could be implemented, we would support this with a big grin.

The display is a set of… let’s call them rectangular rings. These rings are conceptually representing those of your fingerprints. There are some cleverly placed gaps and if you look closely, you can find four numbers in the display. It’s completele cryptic for the untrained eye so some practice is needed. There is an easy mode for those in a hurry. But if you want to baffle the grandma next to you in the bus, the pro mode has to be it.

The watch design is from the future. It’s like the display: super simple with some cleverly placed twists to make it look cool. We’re showing different versions: IP-black, full metal, white acetate and metal with silicone strap.

  2. Apart from the awesome design of the time telling & the watch itself, I particularly like how this reminds us of the unique codes we all contain in our fingerprints.

    Colour e-paper is certainly possible & quite easy by simply adding a tinted film.

    Touch screen should be ok & would certainly re-enforce the fingerprint scanner concept. It might add slight thickness, but since e-paper watches can be so thin anyway, it shouldn’t be a problem. In that event, lack of side buttons helps to keep the width to a minimum. Something to think about.

      Touchscreen controls would certainly be in keeping with the theme and would add a more tactile user interface. Fingers crossed (no pun intended) it can be made slim enough and is a desirable project to develop further. Cheers again! 😀

  3. A great design from two of the masters.
    The stylised fingerprints with embedded numbers are much easier to read than the more realistic ones in Bio-metric, although I do prefer the latter.
    What is really great about this one is the complete package (not surprising from you guys):
    . cryptic numbers (I wouldn’t go for the easy mode)
    . interesting case shape
    . continuation of the theme into the strap (I’ve loved this since I first saw Heather’s Stencil)
    . e-paper use enabling it to be a thin watch (a great change from most I have, barring Mugen and Rorschach)
    Although touch would seem appropriate here, I think the way you have kept the buttons from protruding is cool and I think the cheaper watch that wuld result would be great.
    Hope this gets made and gives me the difficult choose of colours / strap types. 5*/Y

    • I thnk the touch screen tech would ultimately better suite the concept but for feasibility/viability it seemed sensible to feature the more conventional buttons. Id be flexible with either solution if the concept stood a chance of development.

    • I agree, with or without buttons would work. With looks more like a gadget, without is literally fingerprint-using. Tokyoflash have quite some experience now about implementing touch sensitivity. I’m a fan of an all-around-the-wrist-design and a cheap way to do it is with strap pattern. And yes, Heather’s Stencil turned out great ^^ Thanks a couple for the comment and the support Nev!

  4. Hi Sam and Pete, I love the visual effects, also I drew a project (which I love), with the idea of ​​native Lloyd, who does not wish that I propose (I respect his decision, perhaps Pete could convince him, between GB? But that’s another story.)
    Sam and Pete are my first virtual buddies of the Blog with Lloyd, and in more I like what they do, then without hesitating the 5/Y immediately comes me to mind.

  6. Congrats Sam & Pete on a superb design concept. The idea of a bio-metric finger print display is awesome, i would like to suggest that this watch has touch screen controls. Plus user reveals the cryptic numbers a by touching screen with their finger. I feel that this would only add to the Bio-metric concept behind this wrist watch.

      • I would like to further add that the outer most whirl (that frames the four digits exposed reveal Mode) of the finger print display could be used as the mode indicator / frame. Brackets: [ ] Alarm Mode, ] / Date Mode, or a 3/4 complete whirl (Top right hand 1/4 / corner missing): Time Mode.

      Maybe complete frame for the time. It’s seen the most and should look unbroken. Maybe left side missing for Date, looks like a minimalistic D -> ) -> ]. And lower side missing for alarm. Would look like a minimalistic A -> Λ -> Π. So it would be a bit intuitive…

      I like the reveal-at-touch idea. Should be!

      • My suggestion for the Mode Marker frame was based on the Mode marker frame I use for my displays. However I think that your suggestion would Only improve the existing style / look of this design Concept.

        Maybe some additional gaps in the top and bottom area could serve as indicators. Having those would make the whole display look more fingerprinty. Oh so many options…

  9. Great design guys! Clever, simple and effective. I can see the crew on the Nostromo wearing this, as the design loosely reminds me of the wall relief shown throughout the ship:

    I would buy a white-banded, green display (to look like retro MU-TH-UR 6000 displays). Best of luck!

    • Now that you mention it does have that retro futuristic look like it could have come from a sci-fi film.
      Nice colour suggestion too!
      There could also be a glossy black one with yellow/green display that might give a feeling of inside the stricken alien vessel 😀

  11. I like the overall look as a wristband. I like the idea to combine a fingerprint “reading” device with a touch screen. I don’t like the time reading since “optical illusion” are too complex for me/very bad for my brain.
