Lewis says: Axis came from using my 3D package. I wanted to incorporate the form of the x, y and z into a watch and began playing with art styles. The idea to incorporate a compass came naturally with the idea of navigating 3D space.

I tried to keep the engineering side of the watch simple. It uses current technologies such as an accelerometer and either an LCD or LED Display depending on manufacture. The time is a mixture of analogue and digital. Each section of the LED Display points to a numerical value of time 1-12. The minutes are read top to bottom and the seconds are viewed left to right with central pointer showing Northern direction.

I hope fans of modern product design and fashion. the design is aimed at futuristic tech lovers like myself but without the complexities and interference that new wearable technology promises.

Apart from the added utility of a compass, axis offers a different form to common watches parented with a unique display, simple operation and high level of craftsmanship.

  1. I would buy this for sure. Not that I ever really need a compass… but I think I might get lost just for fun with this watch!

    I have no idea how a digital compass would work, I know smartphones have them using GPS data. Anyone know about this?

      yeah i think it would need a GPS transmitter/receiver but you can find that technology in some pretty basic devices these days. i think my grandad has one to find his golf balls on a course and that device was £30-40 so hopefully its viable.

  2. I like this design, the overall simplicity of the case together with the display, but I still have trouble understanding how to read the time, lol. Thumbs up for the idea, this is something I would buy!

  3. Some nice design work here! The display layout looks good to me, it’s and interesting mix of indicators and digits and has the right sort of level of crypticness for my taste… The compass functionality is a fun detail, and might actually come in handy. Solid work!

    If I have one small gripe it’s that there is a rather large difference between some of the hours; for example 9 is shown by three lit segments, but 10 only by one. It’s no big deal, it’s just something that struck me. I’m not sure how it could be altered either, so feel free to disregard it…=)

    • thank you! it was a styling thing more than anything Anders, the overall design looked bolder by using all the segments of a section to display the main 4 hours of the day, 12,3,6,9. they could just be represented by the middle segment of each quarter. (the segments shown in the compass mode render)

      • I know what you mean, and I agree that it looks more striking. Just using the middle segment occurred to me too but I felt it wouldn’t be bold enough, if you see what I mean.

        Maybe the middle segment could extend further out, so it’s the same basic shape as the three segments together? But that might mess up the look. Dividing the outer segments into two, using the inner halves and the center for 12, 3, 6, 9 and the outer and inner halves for 1,2, etc? There are many ways to skin a cat, if it proves to be necessary…=)

  4. Hi Lewis, I have a little the same remarks as Anders S to 9, I just would light the LED 9 and not 8, 9 and 10, but that’s a detail.

  6. Very nice clean looking design. Has a very modern feel. The compass is a nice addition. I would have been tempted to make the digits bigger and shaped to fill the empty space more but that might lose the clean look. I like it as it is so probably best to leave well alone 😉 5/Y best of luck sir! 😀

  8. It looks great as it is, but would also be good with a single segment for 3,6,9,12. Either way, it should get made. Maybe an option of choosing which display type. The compass is a nice additional feature.

  9. I like it with the 3 segments for 3,6,9 and 12. Gives it a quirky vibe. I also think the compass is nifty. There could be an option to turn this off, which would satisfy those who don’t like it.
