Bilateral shows time in four concentric half rings

Design submitted by Peter from the UK.

Peter says: ย This is “Bilateral” an attempt to make a back to basics analogue format watch with an off the shelf movement look a little more interesting. The basic premis is that the face of the watch has been halved and divided into four concentric half rings of markers. The first two (nearest the centre of the watch) describe the hours. The smallest ring shows 0-6 and the larger 6-12. The outer two rings show the minutes, the smaller of the two shows 0-30 and the lagest 30-60. The time is pointed out by two double ended watch hands. The hands have two differnt lenghs of hand at either end. These lenghs relate to the half rings of markers. The shorter hour hand points out the 0-6 hours, and the longer end points out the 6-12 markers. The minute hand does the same thing for the minutes.

This design has a simple and intuative time telling based on conventional analogue which should make the watch accesible to the majority. The unusal and industrial look should appeal to the TF fans.

The double ended hands pointing at concentric half rings to describe the time helps this design stand out from others.

  1. I don’t normally like mechanical analogue watches, but this is interesting. I like the red on black version best.
I am curious about the markers between the hours – if you are going to stick on the number throughout the hour, are the markers just to match the minutes and provide a consistent appearance?

    • Hi Nev, cheers for liking and the feedback! You make a fair point regarding the extra markers on the hour rings. They don’t really need to be there, they just mirror the ones on the minute rings. They could be removed to simplify and de-clutter the display. This would allow the numbers to be bigger and clearer so probably a worth while tweak. Cheers for the support and the feedback sir! ๐Ÿ˜€

    • Yeah it would be nice if Uzumaki had a little analogue brother on the watches page to keep him company ๐Ÿ˜‰

    • Hi Patrick,
Do you mean an opposite hand version for those who wear thier watches on their right arm?
All is possible, I would have thought that you would only need a different face with the numbers on the other side. Everything else should be stay the same, the case would only need rotating 180degrees etc etc. Cheers for the vote and the feedback! ๐Ÿ˜€

  2. Nice one Pete, good use of a standard movement!

I like the concept, but the styling doesn’t work for me. I’m not sure why, but I think it’s probably because it’s a bit too chunky for my taste… I do like the leather on the case (if my eyes don’t decieve me) though, can’t remember seeing that before. =)

    Best of luck mate!

    • Hey Anders,
This is the one I mentioned the other day with the double ended hands. Im sure the proportions could be tweaked to make it look more sleek ๐Ÿ˜‰ Yeah that is leather on the case to match the strap, figured it would add a tactile element to the design. Cheers for the feedback and support sir! ๐Ÿ˜€

  3. An interesting design twist on a mechanical / analogue wrist watch Pete.
Perhaps instead of moving hand the you could have fixed reading hands with moving discs instead?

    • Thanks for liking Andrew. I think using discs in this case would make it a different design. I have done a couple of disc watches, which looked clean and simple. I wanted this design to have a top end complicated feel but using a stock movement and achievable price tag. Only time will tell if I managed it! lol

Im not that familier with the Glashutte brand, but that looks like a very nice watch.
      Cheers for the comparison! ๐Ÿ˜€

  4. Shut up and take my money. .-.

But seriously, that is probably the coolest analog watch I’ve ever seen. I would undoubtedly buy that.
