Sam says:Â I checked my thermometer recently (thanks to a summer flu) and and it’s one that works with quicksilver. It made me think about a mirror LCD display that could pretend to be made of quicksilver drops. I decided for a simple analog based digital display. The inspiration came from the observation of quicksilver forming drops before joining a bigger mass of itself.
There are two circles, an inner one and an outer one. The hour is told by a drop of quicksilver sticking to the inner circle. Sometimes there is a smaller drop sticking to it. This is when it’s PM. The minutes are told by drops that stick to the outer circle. The big drop indicates the 5-minute increment and additional smaller drops represent up to four additional minutes. The hour and minute rings are acompanied by brushed metal of the case. The rest is kept black – simple and elegant.
I think the Quicksilver uses the mirror LCD in a creative way that goes perfectly with the basic idea. It’s a simple watch, easy to read, elegant and a little bit geeky too 🙂

The time reading is so easy that it doesn’t need any markers on the case, which would have spoilt the appearance.
Just wondering if some droplet animation would be possible before displaying the time.

Thank you Nev! I think an animation is possible. There are limitations due to the segmentation of the display but within this limitation a lot of fun is possible.

Once again Sam you amaze me by making something so simple look epic. If I had drawn this it would have looked dull, and people would be like “it’s just some circles….boring”. Its probably not my favourite of yours as it isn’t the most wowee of your work but it looks great and is totally feasible. 5/Y best of luck sir 😀

I like the classy/dress look. I like the idea for the PM & +1 to +4. No markers make it harder to accurately tell the time but put it in the same category as Movado. (that’s very positive)

Oh yeah Movado 🙂 Although here the big minute blobs can only have 12 positions which are easier to guess than all 60 for the single minutes. But in any case it’s a matter of practice. Cool that you like the look Makk 🙂

About the markers: I usually prefer when watches have them but feel that sometime it’s destroying the overall look. (this watch fall in this category & the Movado that have a single dot at 12 o’clock)

Yeah the big minute just hops over the 5 minute increments while the little ones add up to make the reading precise 🙂
Yes, the indicators could destroy a clean look sometimes. Sometimes they can be used to emphasize a look. Each project has its own rules. Fun 😀
