SLASH an LCD watch in Negative Space

Design submitted by Heather from the USA.

Heather says: This idea was developed in reverse of my usual concepts.  I first designed the straps and case, and then designed the digits to fit vertically on the display area.

SLASH is a read-at-a-glance unisex LCD design that includes not only the constant movement of seconds, but also offers a fun animation (like blinds opening and closing) that activates periodically, such as every 5 or 10 seconds.  It has some elements of several of my previous concepts, including Stencil (digits in negative space), Split Second (the tens and ones digits of the seconds are split between the top and bottom of the display), Latitude (flattened, wide digits), and Zag (each slanted digit is formed by a 5×3 array of segments).

SLASH can display the time in either 12 or 24 hour mode, and can easily display date or have an alarm function, as well as a stopwatch function.  It also has an EL backlight for reading the time in dark places.

This modern unisex watch could have wide appeal due to its stylish look and easy to read display.

SLASH stands out because it is a collection of some of the best attributes of some already popular designs.

    • Thanks for your input, Geek! TF can choose to use only the display or the whole concept – I just presented the way I see it 😉 I appreciate your support.

  1. As usual, nice work! I really like the animation that you would see on the watch, as it adds an effect to it and makes it stand out. 5 and Y

    • Thanks Matthew. I must admit, Sam helped me a bit with the animation, so props to him! 🙂

  2. The display is one of your best – a great combination of your other designs. The flattened digits were great on Latitude, but I like these better. The bangle doesn’t work for me – the face would move around the wrist, wouldn’t it? However, as you pointed out, when made, the strap could be different. 5*/Y

    • Ni, Nev – thanks for the compliment! I can understand if the straps suggested don’t work for you. I was partially inspired by Time Capsule: https://blog.tokyoflash.com/2010/02/time-capsule/ , so perhaps something more like that can be done, to keep the same look to my display, with a lens that wraps around, and a more traditional strap. Thanks for voting! 🙂

  3. Cool number layout. I’m not sur eabout the seconds, but they fill the gaps so they are justified. A bangle wouldn’t work for me either but from a girly point of view it’s cool. Maybe some lines in the rest of the watch would make it more a fashion accessory. Maybe bendable ends and an adjustable clasp make it suitable for different wrist sizes. I think it could work well as a more female tough in the catalog. Good luck Heather!

    • Thanks, Sam. Interesting suggestions. 🙂
I guess sometimes I lean too girly, hehe. But we do deserve a place in TF’s line, I must say. Hopefully they will agree! 😉

      • Oh “too girly” sounds a tad negative. It is a branch that TF should try. Unisex sells more of course but girly for girls stands out more. We’ll see ^^

  4. I agree with Sam regarding the seconds, as much as they add animation to the design they feel a little cramed in for my taste. I would have been tempted to make the ends of the case parrellell with the digits. Minor point and toattly subjective anyways. Nice digits, nice look, nice animation! 5/Y best of luck Madame! 😀

    • Hi, Pete. I tried it parallel first, but I definitely found the look way more interesting with the skewed digits. Thanks for your undying support! 😉

  5. Congrats Heather,
A few weeks ago I have submitted a concept quite similar to SLASH using the negative space with the logical nuances,
If I had known yours before I would not have submitted.
    I like your overall solution.
I agree with previous comments and I can not think of anything more constructive.
    My support 5/Y.

  7. Hi Heather. I normally like your designs, but I’m not a fan of knives or Dexter, so I’ll pass on this one…

  8. Hi, Heather. I met you on June 1 in the Scoring Room, and you showed me your watches. I am trying to figure out whether there is a way to purchase one.

  9. I like the animation & the angle of the digits. I prefer black #, like the “back light on” pic. But, I don’t like that the 10’s seconds number is on top.
