Discus Analogue watch with LED

Design submitted by Peter from the UK.

Peter says: This is Discus, a back-to-basics disc style analogue watch. The styling is influenced by retro sci-fi as well as more modern sci-fi films.  I wanted to design a disc analogue watch that was in theory easy to make but still looked exciting.

The time is told in a conventional analogue style by three domed plastic discs. The discs are made of transparent plastic with coated main surfaces. This allows for the backlight to glow thru in places around the diameters of the discs and the indicator notches.

This watch has a sci-fi combined with a retro look. The time telling is conventional and nothing is too extreme to scare away to many TF fans. This watch may appeal to “seven” owners who fancy an analogue as it shares some imagery.

The style combined with conventional time telling  along with hopeful feasibility will let this design stand out from others.

  1. Awesome design!
I would love to buy one. It’s finally a clear, minimalistic and stylish design.
Perfect looks with the flat black, white wistband and blue, green, blue or white LEDs.
Please get this thing to production!

    • Great comment Denis! I couldn’t have put it better myself and I’m incredibly biased! lol cheers for the comment and vote sir! Thanks a lot from England! 😉

    • Thanks a lot Heather! I hope it can be made too. I think if the discs were made of lexan (the same material as rc car bodies) it would be possible. That material is really strong but ways practically nothing. Fingers crossed! If all else fails I have submitted an LCD version too 😉

  2. Reminds me of the Uzumaki. I would be happy for TF to make this watch, so long as they get it right! The Uzumaki watch was a bit of a let-down from Firdy’s original design. TF, if you make this watch, stick to Pete’s design!

    • Very kind DZ, I think TF stay as close to the original designs where they can. Technical issues tend to be the main compromise creator. I have every faith that if TF chose to develop this design they would make it more awesome than my modest attempts. Cheers for the support DZ! 😀

    • The ratings very rarely reflect the general consensus, best not to pay too much attention to it. Cheers for the compliment sir! 😀

    • Hehe yeah lets hope so!
TF gave me feedback a while back on a design called “Hybrid” which had a solid metal disc as part of its display. They said that having heavy metal components to be moved by an analogue movement was expensive due to needing a bespoke powerful mech and the machining of the disc was also expensive. That is why I have avoided metal discs on this one and suggest light-weight plastic ones which can be coated to suit the colour combo’s. So fingers crossed there is a way to do it which is cost effective! 😀

  4. The green and black with white strap is sexy as hell. Not too keen on the chrome faces but thats just personal taste. Arguably my fav design of yours to date. 5Y

      • Yay, I’m glad you likey sir! Yeah chrome is not for everyone, I just try to do a mixture of finishes to keep it interesting. Some work some don’t. Cheers for the censor worthy comment! 😉

  6. A really cool design. One of my favourite as the “four” design by firdaus :

Sober, light curves well think, harmony… a true beauty !

    • Thanks a lot Shana, vey kind. Yeah Fir’s “Four” design is a classic. Im very flattered that my design is considered in the same league 😀

    • I always wonder if you can get movements with the hand order reversed, I assume you can cos I have seen disc style watches with the order reversed. Im pretty easy with the order, whatever’s the easiest to make really. I wouldn’t want to scupper a chance of a design getting made because I was stubborn over a detail like that. Cheers for the feedback and vote sir! 😀

      • I agree with you. I should have elaborate. I like that the central disk do a 360d faster than the central disk. & that it’s the same thing between the middle & outer rings.

        Kinda like the “bell & ross – BR01 red radar” & “BR01 92 radar”.

      • I didn’t realise there was such a range of Bell & Ross watches, nice!
I think there are merits for both orders. I usually use the basis that the hour hand is traditionally the shortest so therefore the middle is hours. That obviously doesn’t work for all concepts. The flip side is that the seconds hand tends to be the lightest in weight so in that theory the middle should be the seconds.
Ultimately I imagine technical implications will determine the order but its fun to contemplate 😀
