Design submitted by Lloyd from Australia.
Lloyd says: “Framed” is an LCD concept watch that displays the time and date in an enigmatic way using rectangular boxes containing strange, seemingly meaningless patterns and shapes.
Reading the time or date, however, is deceptively easy. You just have to ignore the outer layer of squares surrounding each rectangular group of squares and 4 digits magically appear. Basically, it’s an “outside the box” display that requires you to think INSIDE the box. There’s a “quick reveal” mode so you can display the digits without the frames if necessary.
“Framed” has an alarm mode and is USB rechargeable via a computer. It also has an EL backlight which makes the display easier to read at night. The watch’s case and strap are made from stainless steel and are shown in either black or silver, but other colours are possible too. The LCD display is also available in different colours and is “always on”.
This design would probably appeal to anyone who likes quirky modern gadgets, games, puzzles, art, creativity and thinking “outside the box”.
It stands out because of its original, eye-catching and easy-to-read cryptic display.
i’m a big fan of this one… great optical illusion! so easy to read, though, when you know what to look for, and the name says it all – really great! 5*/yes…
only suggestion … there’s really no need for four separated digits…join them together like stencil – then it’s really tricky 😉
(yet still easy enough)

Thanx a lot Heather. 😉 I wanted to keep the numbers separate and framed individually so that the display looks a bit like an art gallery with pictures of weird looking negative shapes. 🙂

Great digits Lloyd. Looks very complex, but is really easy to comprehend. I like the abstract look of the digits too.

I have a strong feeling this watch concept would look really good around a non-imaginary wrists (if all goes well!).
The bi-colored, squared LCD display gives it a modern look, appealing to our Computer Age culture. It’s understated and playful in both function and aesthetic, making the watch very attractive despite not knowing how to read it initially. The quick reveal button is an exposure of the actual display, which is a clever feature for a watch that already looks so smart.
5 and yes! All the best!

Appreciate your support Pete. 😉 I’m glad you think the windows look ok. I was going to add dividers like you suggested as well but it didn’t look quite right to me when I tried it. Maybe another time. 🙂

Me like, and I support the four windows too. What about four windows in a horizontal fashion?

Hello xian. 🙂 Yeah you could do that if you wanted but the numbers would end up being a bit small. Personally, I prefer them arranged like this.

What a great idea, Lloyd — thinking outside the box to keep things in perspective inside the box! Would love to see this one someday on store shelves or in jewelry cases — a definite buy!

I like the design. It’s like many frozen falling boxes. (and the 8 look like a chessboard)
I would buy.
