Design submitted by Lloyd from Australia.
Lloyd says:Β This LCD concept watch displays the time and date using an enigmatic-looking arrangement of shapes made up of squares. That’s why it’s called “Tessera”, after the small square tiles used to make mosaics.
The display contains 3 vertical columns of 9 squares, with the top square representing 1 and the bottom square representing 9. To make counting easier, each column is divided into 3 groups of 3 squares. There are also 6 indicator squares, one on each side of each of the 3 columns. These move up or down to the appropriate squares in the columns to give a 6-digit time or date. A zero is indicated by the absence of one of these squares.
If you’re in a hurry, there’s a “quick reveal” mode which enables you to display the time or date with digits instead.
Tessera has an alarm and is USB rechargeable via a computer. It also has an EL backlight which makes the display easier to read at night. The watch’s case and strap are made from stainless steel and are shown in various combinations of black, silver and gold, but other colours are possible too. The LCD display is also available in different colours and is “always on”.
This design would probably appeal to anyone who likes both modern and retro gadgets, patterns, games, puzzles, geometry, art and creativity.
It stands out because of its unusual yet easy-to-read cryptic display.
i’m a big fan of this one. beautiful and clever. i love the seconds, and the square-ish display. the quick reveal is also a kicker. love it. 5* silver and purple for me π

Clean look.
Easy to read when you know the secret, but cryptic enough when you don’t.
Clever with distinct shapes in quick reveal with only 3×3 pixels.

The telltale tiles are deceptively tricky to decipher, but are soon revealed to be as easy as 1, 2, 3 (and 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9).
Very clever concept. 5 and yes. :D.
Best of luck!
