Design submitted by Sam from Germany.
The Monolith concept started with sketching for minimalistic numbers. I made these slim blocks with different lengths that form numbers in a new way. They look a bit like a barcode or some skyscraper lights. There are no horizontal elements but these numbers work just fine.
For the case I chose a minimalistic, slightly curved shape and straps that follow the curve. I was playing with different materials. The first version of the case is a smooth chrome block. The LEDs are covered by a translucent mirror layer. The carbon straps of this version bring a nice contrast and make the case look more solitary. Another variant is a black steel case with cuts for the time bars combined with a segmented strap in the same material. Also a simple but a more distinct in expression. The third version is an eye catching acetate case with slight grooves for the numbers, clamped by chrome elements that hold silicone straps.
Monolith is pure, simple, minimalistic, geeky and stylish as well.
Thank you Toky for posting this concept!
Hi everybody 🙂 Hope you like this one. More images, more concepts here: ☑

OK, for me that will be the first version. The mirror effect makes it possible to carry all the styles of clothing.

It’s easy to read Sam and the graphics are great, but I’m not that excited by the numbers to be honest. In fact I ditched this idea myself for that reason.

I dunno if this is of interest to you, but I did the 8 with just 4 vertical lines and just one space on each side. I still gave it 4*.

Hi Lloyd, thanks for the insight 🙂 The 8 you are suggesting is also cool. Maybe the better alternative. The only negative point would be, that it can’t be done with the current LED configuration – it needs another one. Hehe I’m all excited about the numbers because they are so futuristic! I was trying to make a typeface with it but some letters can’t go with only two lines to I’m taking a break for rethinking.

Just chipping in here.
Both sets of numbers would be cool, but I’m not sure there’d be much benefit in switching it up. These numbers are very easy to read and look great. At most, it would be a negligible benefit to switch the numbering style. I put my vote as 5*/Y for the current design.

Don’t worry JP. It’s ok as it is.

That’s really an intersting one. I love the fact that you can make pretty cryptic stuff which are actually easy to read once you know how. Still waiting to get news on your ito design >.<

Oh thats nice of you to say. Merci bien!!
Do you really mean the Ito or the Itozero? The Ito is very old by now. It was my second concept for the blog 🙂 In any case, please be patient. Even I don’t know if the Ito will ever be considered to be made.

Glad to see you guys out there with a blog, it is all too easy for Microsoft bashing – have done it myself a few times in the past! Couldnt live without Office though & Excel rates in my top ten favourite ever programs – in fact somewhere I still have v 1.01 on Mac floppys!
Hope you get a positive response – dont think I can look at office quite the same knowing that a professional clown has been involved!!!

I love it. I like everything about it, except the acetate version. My fav is the black ss version. ( the chrome would be #1, because it has a wow factor, but I’m not sure about the readability ). 5* ( I would buy )

Thanks for the comment Makk. Always cool how you think about the concepts 🙂 I think the readability would work good. I have a watch with a mirror face and LEDs underneath and I can’t complain. Good that you found a favorite ^^

TY for the info. I don’t have a watch like that in my collection. ( mirror face with LED underneath ) It’s always good to have access to watches that we can test the readability 1st, and under different lighting condition.
