Keysay watch design inspired by keyboard symbols.

Design submitted by Jose from Spain.

Jose says: I could say that this idea came to me after exciting reading about the machine “Enigma”, developed by the Germans to encrypt their messages during II World War, or has been the result of using a metalanguage as Leetspeak, or such once a strange code suggested by a science fiction movie, but none of this would be true. The truth, is that the idea came accidentally to stay absorbed looking at the mini keyboard of my Macbook; suddenly, there it was, the first line of keys, and above each number a symbol, and thus the ¡1 to 0!.

I am new in this Blog and as a follower of the advanced designs shown on TF, I understood that this combination of numbers and symbols could be used it to create a new way to present time and accept the Design challenge of TF.

So, I got down to work (my first project as an amateur) to design more than a conventional watch. For several months I was working on the design of the case and the display…, the typeface…, the colors…, I learned how to work with a 3D program…, materials…, finally, after nearly a year of effort and tests, today, I am able to present the challenge to TF and encourage those who have a dream or an idea in this context, to participate in this search for the original and extraordinary.

Let me introduce “KEY SAY” WATCH.

To design “KEY SAY” WATCH, I used a simple geometry, almost elemental, functional, versatile and compact. I mean technology better suited to this type of watch is the “touch screen” similar to that used in the “smartphones” but may consider other alternative technologies that work well. “KEY SAY” WATCH can be evolved at various levels, but for now is just a watch that has initially the following features:

Hours, minutes and seconds

Day of week, day, month and year

Mode time in 12 or 24 hours

Moon Phases and time display mode “AM”

Rotate screen

Chronometer…

By default, the display information is done with the symbols shown in the attached images, and of course this does not mean that the user has to learn this “new code”, fortunately, now in almost every household there a computer with your conventional keyboard, so we are quite familiar with these symbols and their meaning unconsciously, by that, I think with minimal practice does not have to touch the screen of your “KEY SAY” WATCH to display the translation numbers and read the time correctly. This code of 10 symbols work like a computer screensaver, when you touch the screen goes to the background and after a specified time (for the case of the watch estimated at about 10 seconds) is turned back on. This feature makes it unique screensaver presentation time can be disabled or enabled by the user if you do not want your watch to be the focus of attention between your friends and subject of conversation to casual observers.

“KEY SAY” WATCH initially, does not present conventional time reading, but it does show a urban personality, contemporary and cosmopolitan, more or less sporty depending on the materials used for manufacturing (steel, rubber, aluminium, acetate, … etc..), I think the kind of audience that may be interested, is among the professionals, technicians or attracted by technology, trends and fashion, between 28 and 45, dynamic and enterprising men and women.

There are several features that can make a “KEY SAY” WATCH unique, but perhaps the “Rotate screen” (do not confuse with the “accelerometer” sensor of mobile or graphics tablets), is the feature that makes it special. Most watches are designed for use on left or right wrist, and in each instance, this implies a change in the physical design of the watch. This feature solves this problem because used by a right handed person or left-handed, or when the user ever decide to change the watch to his right wrist, you just touch the rotation symbol on the screen and automatically it rotates 180 degrees while keeping all its functionality and appearance.

My apologies for the extension the submission and use the Google Translator.

I really enjoyed developing this project and hope to soon show others that I’m working. Hope you enjoy watching.

Thank you very much for your support.

  1. Nice idea using symbols that already have a know association. Great graphics and nice styling for a first submission (welcome to the blog Jose) I think the reveal mode is a sensible feature, even tho I use a keyboard eveyday Im not convinced I would learn all the symbols consiously or sub-consiously lol.
In summary, great first submission, support worthy, 5/Y Best of luck! 😀

  2. A lot of nice features to this with the moon phases, days of week, rotate etc

One thing to remember is different countries have different keyboard symbols on those keys. Not that it really matters for the watch though.

My top row is like this:
    normal key: 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 0 – =
    Press Shift: ! @ #$ %^& * ( ) _+

    • Onisan Hello,
Yes, you’re right that there are different symbols and keyboards in different countries but this is a feature that may be chosen if KEYSAY from concept to reality.

  3. Neat renderings! Very good concept (I like the idea, and I think its geeky in re freshly cool way), very good watch design (the watch face is unique, matches with the strap, combined gives the entire design quality look and stylish casual feels).

I like how you present the idea, showcase from different angles, different poses, I think they are like laszlo work combined with Sam Berlin’s.

I’m impressed with the entire works. You are pure designer with passion instead of just mere competition hunter. Salutation. 5* and yes would buy!

(ppl rated less than 4* with no reason sure wr jealous)

  6. Wow – fantastic first design, Jose! I really like the overall feel of this watch. I think the keyboard coding is an excellent idea. I would like to see the option of ordinary numbers, too. In fact, I like this watch more for the casing and band rather than the keyboard concept. If I had one, I don’t think I’d be using the symbols much. There’s another issue with this – which may be cool to some – in that, all those symbols together often symbol swear word censorship.

Great job – 5* from me!

Good thing about this concept (keyboard), is that you can activate it or not, and the images and the video above you can see some examples with numbers.
On the other hand, I think the “words of censorship” only can last a second in my humble opinion.

  9. Welcome to the blog Jose!

Very nice idea! It’s contemporary, cryptic, decypherable (and if not, we learn it and know our keybords better then). In my country it’s

    1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 0
    ! ” § $ % & / ( ) =

If the display can show all the symbols anyway, it would be super easy to let it be adjustable for every country. Besides the keysay display (cooooool name!) I like the additional elements that make the display a bit more busy and informative. I also like the basic shape of the watch. The proportions don’t seem perfect for me but hey, that would be in Tokyoflash’s hands if they decide to produce this watch. Good luck for this nice way to encrypt time!

  11. good job,
i like this watch a lot. i think it’s a very nice design with easy shapes, not too strange, not too simple, not too eye-catching, not too serious… very balanced to wear any day.
i like the symbols language, it’s funny and if your watch is stolen maybe the thief would think it doesn’t work 😛
congratulations jose, hope to see it done

Marca tu tiempo… marca tu vida… Enhorabuenaaa!!!

  18. Welcome to the blog, Jose.

About the watch : The overall look is ok. I don’t like the idea to use these special symbol as a time-telling method. I like the normal number.

Now the positive stuff : I like the idea to add the weekday, the moon phase, the rotate feature and to have the date/month/year always on. ( which are new/rarely feature on TF watches )
