Sam says:ย The idea for GLYPH came when thinking about mirror LCD. The term itself became inspiration for this concept.
I mirrored the four classical digits twice, once horizontally and then once vertically. The resulting digits are point symmetric and look like glyphs from an unknown language, terrestrial or from outer space. There are actually four modes to mirror the digits that result in symmetric digits.
All these modes require the same LCD segment layout so I suggest to let the wearer chose via button, which one to display.
The reading rule is: concentrate on one of the 4 corners and find the well known number within the glyph.
A random mode, which changes the mirroring mode each minute, would be a good challenge for those who like it a bit more difficult. For those, who like it cryptically looking but quicker to read, a quick-solve-button would be wise.
Of course I am suggesting mirror LCD for the display and a metallic case – so everything fits together.

Oh there are many way out there ๐ It’s fun. Yes, I couldn’t decide for one reading so I took all 4. An LCD watch could carry them all and show them via button press or randomly (extra challenge). There are some times that can be confused, when you don’t know the mirror mode, but with another press of a button, it could all be cleared up. As I said: fun hehe. Thank you for the comment Kraut!!

Sam, I sense there is influence of Ancient Chinese charather or Chinese Font in this watch! Very clever!

Hehe, thanks for the comment! These glyphs are real kanji actually: ็ฐๅฃๅๅทฅไธญ! The rest have a nice resemblance. Maybe that attract more chinese and japanese people. For all who like kanji, I’m working with kanji in my Kaku (็ป) concept soon.

Thank you Jordan! That’s the toykoflash effect. BTW, referring to our converation, you can see, this is one of my most simple watch geometries (yet) and I’m concentrating on the display idea this time. Seems to work so far, since noone complained hehe. So realism is not necessarily the main goal. But it’s fun to see a realistic looking concept, no doubt. I’ll try to keep it up ๐

While I’m here, I just noticed a potential flaw with this design… 8’s could be read as 6’s, 3’s or 7’s… or many characters really. Still worthy of 5* though.

Nono ๐ The 8s are just fine. A quadruple 6 (or 7 or 3) looks different. BUT there are similaritities. A top left 6 looks like a bottom right 9. But then you must have all 4 numbers in trouble to not be able to read the exact time. In such a case the solve button (yay, anti-trouble invention!) helps. I think some individual numbers, different from the traditional LCD style would help here.

Since you mentioned complaining, the “7” in 07:46 in this picture: http://www.tokyoflash.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2012/07/sam-jerichow-glyph-04.jpg is a little bit higher than the other characters ๐ Just teasing, obviously.
Once my render finishes (30 hours and counting), I plan to send in my newest design to the nice people at TF. I’ll also send you the image files if you’re interested to see what your insight has brought to the table.
This Tokyoflash design “Challenge” may have been misnamed; if you ask me, it’s more of a Tokyoflash design Collaboration, but that’s just my opinion ๐

Thanks to the kind and helpful people here on the blog, I’ve managed to hone my 3ds Max skills considerably and I think you’ll notice my next submission will be noticeably better than my other 3d renders.

At 1st I thought that the time-telling method is way too complex, but we would end up with learning the 10 new digits as a whole and forget to extract the good #. I like the simple overall look. 5* and I would buy.
