Dietrich says: I couldn’t decide if I wanted to design an analog or digital watch. Then it came to me…

News article: “This poor watch has a problem: it doesn’t know if it’s analog or digital. It wants to be both, but it can’t be 100% one or the other. It has a split personality, and jumps over massive hurdles to get by with its personality problem. It ends up being exactly half analog and digital – and needs major psychotherapy to rectify the tension created by its dual personality. Fortunately for the user, TELLING the time is easy!”

I wanted to capture something of the shape of a cuckoo clock. Everything about the watch is a balance between analog and digital elements. I didn’t want either watch-type to dominate over the other. It is truly a split personality!

Time and Date:

Large Digits (LCD) = Hours/ Month

Physical Hand = Minutes

Small Digits (LCD) or Partial Analog Hand (LCD) = Seconds/ Day

This is a humorous piece, yet at the same time sophisticated looking. It has elements that appeal to techie people and those who like style and sophistication. You will be noticed wearing this watch!

The design is not merely square or circular. The shape is striking, and the hemispherical ornaments are beautiful. It is also colourful, and because the digits are always moving to different locations, it would certainly grab attention. The watch band also gives voice to the personality conflict!

  1. Nice concept! This watch is very cool, and is easy to tell time with. The fact that it’s half analog and half digital makes it very interesting. I give it a 5.

  4. I had a similar idea reagarding to the digits moving to a avoid an analogue hand, I was going to devide the face into quaters. Interestingly I was going to call it split personality, so a few similar themes there (GMTA) The styling isnt nessesarily my cup of tea but I like the idea obviously. The case shape reminds me of an old personal magnifying glass that revolves out of a case with the same shape. I fully support the idea! 5/Y

    • You must have similar ideas to me! In a way, this face is also divided into quarters, as the seconds have four “digit” representations in the respective quadrants, plus an analog representation. I’m sure they could tweak the styling a bit…but I wanted to have a kind of “cuckoo clock” feel. The beauty of the name “Identity Crisis” is that you can call it iCri for short…it’s sad and making fun of Apple. Thanks heaps for your support, Pete, I really appreciate it.

  7. I like this design, except the wrist band. The watch have a simple and easy way of reading as well as the cuckoo design is cool sleek. But, why overdo the wrist band? If the wrist band is simple without any graphic, I think the watch is ready for market.

  8. This is an idea with a lot of possibilities. There are so many variations you could play around with to mix things up.

    In the morning the hour font could be scruffy, just like your tangled hair. During the day its more refined, but by 8pm its relax-with-a-beer-font! A watch with its own personality.

    Maybe it would get annoyed with you sometimes & tell you the wrong time just to pi** you off!

    • You just described the perfect watch for singletons, they would then know what its like to be in a relationship as your watch tells you off for being late even tho it told you the incorrect time! lol

  9. HAHA, thanks for that input, TF! I like the idea of a watch with attitude, and I think mine has plenty of it. It’s confused about everything – you, me, the world…and most of all itself! Recently I saw my watch surreptitiously leaving the psych ward…the poor thing.

  11. I like the idea and the overall look. I have a minor problem with the always moving seconds between 4 positions. ( it could be 2, top or bottom )
