I was inspired by an older blog entry posted by Tokyoflash that used two colors of LEDs to count the time: http://www.tokyoflash.com/blog/2010/02/time-to-streamline/ The Retro-bot LED watch concept is meant to be similar to the classic Tokyoflash watches, but instead of using counting to tell the time, the display shows a distorted version of the digital time.
The display consists of four digits in alternating colors. The first digit uses only two LEDs and can show only a 0 or a 1. The other three digits are each 7-segment arrangements of LED shapes that can light up to display any digit from 0 to 9. To avoid too much symmetry, and give the display a more interesting look, these three arrangements are all different from each other. Nevertheless, a 7-segment digit is a 7-segment digit – you just need a top, middle, and bottom segment, one on each side on top, and one on each side on the bottom.
Time is displayed on button press – but the display is still interesting when off, because of the raised LED markers. Also, there is an option for periodic animation.
Those who appreciate the classic LED watches might enjoy this little twist. I believe this design will probably appeal more to men than to women, although a unisex version could be created if the size is kept on the smaller end, and feminine colors considered.
This design stands out because it is a new way of looking at LED watches.

This one rocks! This is cool because it has the charme of early Tokyoflash concepts in this blog (that haven’t been made real 😦 ) but at the same time it’s relatively easy to read – a really nice combination! Hehe, that’s basically what you, Heather, wrote up there 😉 Reading now…
Cool that the 1st digit is smaller than the other ones, that have to display more numbers. Adds more asymmetry and makes the display perfectly arbitrary.
I like it, I would buy it, 5*, good luck!!

It certainly has retro circuit board charm, I agree with Sam. Its surprising that the numbers are so easy to read because, at first, you wouldn’t think so from those shapes. Works well. Good Job!

Nice simple idea and time telling method combined with a technical and complicated looking display. I can imagine the lens being really tactile with all the lumps and bumps. Nice retro futuristic feel too, 5/Y best of luck! 😀

I just want to know how you can take a 2-D drawing and make it 3-D. Is there like a program or something you have to download to your computer or what? Also the watch is sick bro!!!
