3D Tilt Watch Concept

This watch design is a fairly conventional analogue disc watch with a more 3D look.The discs are  extruded and tapered to give a more dynamic look and resemble a car disc brake or tyre.  This 3D disc arrangement can tilt (hence the name) to assist in time reading but also to add to the quirky look.

The three discs display the time via a window/viewer in the housing. The bottom of the three discs displays the hours, the middle one displays groups of ten minutes and the top disc displays the single minutes. This design would also work easily well using a more conventional format of: one disc for hours, one for minutes and one for seconds.

This design has an industrial feel that will apeal to people who like engineered mechanical products. The addition of the tilting display will apeal to those who like things that are quirky and little different.

    • Thanks Lloyd, It turned out a bit chunkier and more industrial than the original image in my mind’s eye.
      Im not sure if this one will appeal to the ladies due to its proportions etc. Only time will tell I guess.

  4. The idea is poor! The presentation (especially the last picture) deplorable.
    Forget this terrible presentation! Finally, you put a picture of human wrist. Raise a lot of the show! Make a picture like Laszlo or Sam or forget the real picture of the watch. no
    There is no harmony!

  5. I like the crater look of this design. I think the tilt, as much reason it might have, is too much. The army of numbers and the highlighting viewer thingy are cool enough. If you wanna keep the tilt, then there shouldn’t be a gap at maximum tilt. Besides dirt collection issues, it just looks better when it would work like a chameleon eye. Good luck Pete!

    • The tilt of the display isnt really a necesity, you can read the time easily enough when the display is flat. The angle was just the image in my minds eye when I first thought of this design (kinda reminded me of the hoop over wembley) Chameleon eye is a nice way of thinking of it (and a nice way of keeping another cammy realated design in our minds! lol), also the movement adds a tactile experience to the watch. Maybe the angle of the display moves in conjunction with the time to add a new dimension, or if the watch was automatic or kinetic the tilt movment may generate some energy.

  6. cool concept, but i don’t think it’s for me…as you mentioned above, Pete, it’s a bit chunky for ladies – and i would break it for sure by knocking it against stuff! good luck with the male demographic! 😉

  9. I like the concept, but I don’t like the zeros on the 10’s disc– just display ‘0’,’1′, etc. rather than ’00’, ’10’…
    Also, do the wheels ‘click’ on the minute, like an old flip clock, or do they rotate continuously, like an odometer? The latter would be easier to construct, but less convenient for actually reading the time. Thanks for your submission

    • Hi Keith,
      You make a fair point about the 10 min incruments. Making them a single figure would make reading easier and allow the number to be a larger font size. In an ideal world it would be a jump hour type mechanism that “clicks” around and the numbers are always seen clearly. But like you say a traditional analogue mechanism would be easier and cheaper.
      As I methioned in the text description this concept would also work with a more conventional hours, mins, secs format, again this would make manufacture easier and cheaper. The look would remain much the same and having the seconds displayed would give the watch constant movement.

      • I feel like this would be a good gift for my engineer friend. It has a real industrial feel to it. It would also go well with steampunk, I think.

  11. I’d say this is too over imaginative. Apply some physic and make the watch look ready for customer, since you design in complete 3d rendering. I think a comment from Tom above, though sounds a bit bitter, but I think he was sane. I know my comment is not constructive, but I think giving a false comment is worse. 3*

  13. It’s a very nice 12-5-9, but the regular position totally saved it. If you add a glass, there wouldn’t be any problem of dirt collection. A concave would be better. I love the marks on the disk used to imitate tyre and the brake imitation. I agree with Keith : the 10’s disk should be 1, 2, 3, etc not 10, 20, 30.

    Change the 10’s disk and add a glass & I would buy. ( would have been a 4.5 but we can’t do it )

    • Hey Makko, thanks for the feedback! Yeah I agree that a jump hour mech would be best and like Keith mentioned the single figure for the ten minute groups would work better. There is a concave glass on the model, it’s the most obvious on the exploded view. Cheers for the 4.5, I would happily take a 4 😀
