Scroll Watch Design Takes You Back and Forward in Time

Peter says: “This is “Scroll” and as the name suggests this design was inspired by the form of ye olde worlde rolled up parchment. The basic form consists of two round dials with scroll like discs for hands.

The time telling method is very simple: the top dial displays the hours and the lower the minutes in an analogue style, powered by two traditional analogue mechanical movements.

The scrolled hands are essentially a helixed surface. The leading edge acts as the hand to point out the time. The front leading face would be illumintated at a touch of one of the buttons mounted top and botton of the two dials for poor light conditions.

This design has a steampunk feel, especially in the distressed steel material. As a result it will hopefully appeal to people with a taste for industrial styling and mechanical movements.

The watch is very simple both in form and in use so may appeal to people who like no frills minamalistic design. The simple form and function combined with the feasibilty helps this design stand out from others. The design is simple and would allow for traditional manufacturing techniques and process which increase the viability.”

    • Yeah this one is back to basics fun with a retro feel, I wanted to come up with something that was very easy to make but looked different. Im glad it appeals! Thanks a lot for the comment and the stars! 😀

  7. Its a cool design, but will take a lot of power to turn those plates,
    also its very big, maybe you can figure out to tell the time with 1 plate?

    • I think if each disc is powered by one movement that it shouldnt be a problem, depends on what they are made of I guess. You could tell the time in a more conventional way like the one Timo linked too but it would stray away form the original inspiration. Size wise, yeah my images make it look large but the proportions could easily be tweaked to give it more mass appeal. Thanks for the feedback Befrey! 😀

      • Im pretty easy regarding the details, so it wouldn’t need to be a disc. Would it still be the same concept with more traditional hands? I dunno. Thanks for the feedback! 😀

      • Usually those type of watch have two movements. ( I think ! based on the Marvin M014/M024 ) The choice of the material and it’s thickness is important, because if it’s too heavy, the movement souldn’t work.

      • Yeah two movements seemed the simplest way around the two dials situation without having to search for a suitable duel movement or the cost of developing a gearbox to power the two displays. I imagined a lightweight plastic for the discs, the satin finish looks nice with a metallic case. The discs could have cut outs to let the light through from underneath. Alternatively they could be a clear plastic with a coating over the majority excluding the illuminated parts which would give a similar effect. Thanks for the feedback!

  8. Hmmmm…. It doesn’t look like a scroll, but a steam-punk goggle. Futuristic binocular also yes. I love this to be a single display though, like the link above suggested, but that’ll make it other design. Still a good design. If wearing this, I have to move to Texas 😉

    • I will happily go with steampunkt google. Yeah I think making it only one dial would be too similar to that other design. I might do a mkII version that Is a bit more slim line and sleek! I don’t understand the Texas link but I thank you for your comment! 😀

  10. I like this, it looks industrial in a way but is also modern and stylish, and finished very well, a stand alone piece of trendy jewellery. Nice job.

    • Yeah it might be too industrial for some peoples tastes but I could imagine it looking pretty cool if it was ever made, especially after TF worked their magic on it. Hopefully like you they will see the potential.

  11. It makes me mad that some published designs, which I think are bad ideas, have high scores, and other ideas like this that I find VERY good and original, and have a lower score 😦
    2.7? should be above 4.5!

    I love this one Pete, although the render’s “graphic style” not much, but I love the idea 🙂
    5* and Yes (and if I had money, I’d buy several :D)

    • Thats very kind of you to say Ignatius! The score does seem a little harsh, but some people perhaps cant see past the “graphic style”. I am currently working on an updated version which hopefully will be added here soon (in regular rendering style! lol)
      Hopefully one day you will get the opertunity to buy! (assuming TF see past the ratings)

      • An design is a design,
        maybe ppl got a bit scared of the cartoony look.
        because of that “fear”they find it bad presented.
        and this is a good design, there are some flaws, and its for a very specific group of ppl.

        And ignatius, a good presented, bad design can be rated higher then a rly good, bad presented design.
        Its moslty the mind of the ppl and how you can trick them.

  16. I love dual-dial watches. ( like the Marvin M014/M024 & the Rolex Cellini Prince ). I would buy even if it was two hand instead of helixed surface.

      • Helixed surface make it more steampunk. But the weight have to be equallly distributed around the disk, be as light as possible and need a higher torque movement because if it’s like a turning-disc clock, a normal one will do this : when the weight is higher at the 3 o’clock position it will pull the weight down at the 6 o’clock and when the movement will want to get the time at 7 o’clock the weight will pull it down and destroy the movement. A single-hand display don’t have this problem.
        ( I learned that the last year when I planned to do a turning-disk clock )
