Find the Time within the LCD Bubbles

Design submitted by Lloyd from Australia.

Lloyd says: “In this concept watch design called “Bubbles” the digits are hidden in groups of bubbles. Each of the watch’s 4 oval windows contains 8 identical overlapping transparent bubbles.

The 9 resulting lens-shapes formed where they overlap resemble the segments used to display LCD digits. By removing lines from the appropriate lens shapes, a clearly discernible digit is left amongst the bubbles in each window. The diagrams below show this more clearly.

This watch has a time and a date mode and is USB rechargeable via a computer. The time display can be set to “always on” or “off” to prolong battery life. It comes with a choice of several different coloured straps, either plain or with a funky bubble pattern, and the display comes in different colours too. In addition, there is a “quick reveal” option so that you can just display the digits without the bubbles.

I feel this design would appeal to anyone wanting a quirky way of telling the time. This design stands out because of its unusual bubble display. It also has a slightly Gothic look and is easy to read.”

This fun watch design is very simple to read when you know how. If you could change one thing about this design to improve it, what would it be? Let us hear your thoughts in the comments section below.

  1. This is yet another unique display. It is VERY easy to read. The digits have quite a peaceful appearance. I love it and I want a purple one please, please, PLEASE.

  3. i think the digits are very creative, and i like them a lot, but with the current display layout, i wouldn’t want it on a watch…it isn’t aesthetically pleasing, imho, so no from me, but 5* anyway for the really great digits!

  4. Thanx Heather. 😉 Don’t worry, everyone has different taste. I just wanted to create something that looked different to the designs already on here.

    • Hey Patrick, we havent seen a design from you in a while now (they are missed).
Have TF told you why they aren’t hitting the blog? If not maybe you should ask.

      • Hi Pete, I had already asked for the TF “plasma-watch” that had not been published?
If for each project, I have to ask? I must certainly no correspond to critaires TF?

      • Did they respond to your question? You shouldn’t have to ask each time.
Seems a shame, all you earlier stuff was plenty good enough so I wouldnt expect your more recent stuff not to be good enough! I hope you have more luck soon! 😉

      • I’ve been wondering about that too, Patrick, but I’m not sure what to do about it. I hope you don’t let it put you off coming up with new designs. 😉

      • That’s very kind of you to say that, Patrick. 😉 Thank you for the translation too. Saved me googling. 🙂 You have a great imagination yourself. 😉

  5. I would like to suggest some thing:

How about having one display, not four.
How about moving the numbers closer together, so the bubbles would overlap. That would make it look more compact like lather.
How about letting bubbles away, when they don’t participate in forming a number? The result would look less rigid and constructed but more diversed and flexible, like real lather.

Right now, there is so much display space but so less relevant areas. A more compact look (bigger numbers) or a more wholistic one (letting the full display be lather instead of 4 little bubble groups) would help this concept I think. Maybe it would look more difficult to read then, but with the pressing of a button, one can have the easy time AND would also get used to the display.

Now the positive part: I really like this idea of letting circles intersect to create the 7-segment-numbers! Very creative, very cool looking… I could imagine this being animated… bubbles getting closer, forming numbers, then bubbling away again 🙂

Lloyd, you creative brain, good luck with this one!

    • I agree with Sam that one larger display with the bubbles oevrlapping might be fun, maybe the out line of the display could be quite organic too to compliment the random shape of the bubbles etc. There is definately plenty of potential regarding animations. Also if there is room on the LCD maybe a few segments in the bubbles to suggest reflections etc.

      • OK Pete. 😉 Thanx for your feedback. I’m sure TF will find it interesting. Essentially I just created a fun new way for displaying the digits in a cryptic way. They’ll do whatever they will with the rest of it. Personally, I like it like this and it’s different from the usual stuff on here.

  6. Hey thanx Sam. 🙂 I did set out to do the design in that way, but then I got worried that people might find it all too confusing when trying to see the digits. I tried removing bubbles as well to make the design less structured, but then for some reason – probably a lack of confidence – I changed the design back again. lol I was hoping TF might do an animation so that you got like bubbles passing the windows. At one time I was thinking of making the watch a bit Steampunky/Jules Verney so that it would be like looking out of a submersible’s windows. But I thought that might be too much. Knowing people are going to vote on your ideas tends to make you less willing to take risks although it shouldn’t.

    • Hehe, I see. Yeah, I’m also struggling with how to present my idea, sometimes risky, sometimes less, so I understand you. What we show is one end of a chain of thoughts and it could vary if just one of these thoughts would’ve been different. Your idea is told and we will see if this becomes something touchable 😀

Oh I just has the idea of letting the covering glass be bumpy… bubbly… But I realize, you would just have convex squares there since every bubble has the same size.

      • I’m glad you understand where I’m coming from, Sam. 😉 Btw, I just remembered why I made each of the digits with the same number of bubbles. It’s so you can’t just guess which digit each cluster represents from the pattern of remaining bubbles.

Maybe you can use your bumpy glass idea on one of your future designs. 🙂

  7. I love Lloyd’s watches. They are so mesmerizing, I’m only afraid that if I actually wore one it would so hold my attention that I would end up lost in it and either walk into a building or not get back to my work. 😉 Seriously, this is just another creative output from one of the most imaginative people I know. I’ve asked Lloyd to think about designs for women and children too!

  8. I’m debating with myself whether to post this. IMHO.

Sorry King, maybe my imagination is different from the rest, because, what I see here is not bubbles, but, curly, hairs…. On artistic, puzzle, and Aha!-side, this is an indeed, a very good illusion.

My suggestion, try different layout other than HH top MM bottom — it would be too obvious if used too frequently. Before this, you used triangle illusions, well this is your type of watch but how about explore other things?

I hope this doesn’t hurt, you know false hope is a cancer. You have many other designs that I already liked, so don’t worry.

    Peace 😉

    • No worries Firdy. 😉 It’s good to get a nudge in a new direction sometimes. :o) I’ve been trying to come up with some really different ideas recently. Hopefully they’ll make it onto the blog in a few weeks time.

      Nite.

  9. this one took me a lot of time to figure out ( and the last pic ) I would buy it, since a few of my watch are like that. I love the “Reveal” pic. It would be a nice option.
