Aqua watch causes ripples in time.

Design submitted by Cory from the USA.

Cory says: While viewing a droplet of water on high speed camera, I noticed two things. Each time the droplet enters the water, a smaller, lighter droplet bounces back to the surface, this happens many times over until the droplet is microscopic in size. Water droplets are also not tear drop shaped, but perfectly spherical. I wanted to make a timepiece that captured this.

The inner 3 ripples are hours, 3 6 9 and 12 are in their relative positions on a clockface, while the other hours build up toward them. Minutes in groups of 5 form the outer ripple, and single minutes are shown as the droplet in the center.

Those fans of Tokyoflash who are more fluid in their view of time would enjoy this concept.
The LEDs are heavily refracted by the curved glass of the face. When viewed from odd angles it gives the illusion of water, when viewed from head on, the LEDs are easily read.

There are 2 animations of the watch, please click these links to view: [ANIM1] [ANIM2]

  1. Since the lens is refractive, and depends on refractive index of material, the actual item (referring to this watch design) would be more interestingly appeal by the effect of refracted LED lights. Don’t really agree with the existence of for dots at the middle, I support this design to be considered with some tweak. Good work!

    • Did you check out the animation? I feel like it captures the reason for the dots being in the center the way they are. When the wearer presses the button, the water droplet falls and turns on all the LEDs 😉

      • Yes, I’m aware of the animations. However, in my opinion, since everyone has different way of thinking, I feel like the four dot stacking is disturbing the aqua effect of the display. I believe it can be adjusted to be more centric feel. BTW, this shape already nice and everything else is the matter of taste. Oh the strap is quite decent, forgot to mention this. Most of your designs make me feel like want to rock them in Fallout if they are available as mod item. xD

  2. Woohoo! I’ve been waiting for this one to hit! and now it has.
I love the look of this watch and had to scrap one of mine that looked a little similar (this is still better anyhow) The visuals are top notch as per usual from you.
I would have to agree with Firdaus about the drops in the center, I would prefer maybe smaller rings or something. but that is my only niggle.
Top Notch, 5 stars and Yes

  3. I like this watch lots – it’s got a great strap and a what I’d consider easy to read system which I just know would irritate so many of my colleagues!!!
I wouldn’t change a thing – the curved glass face and refraction I don’t fully understand, but I now want to buy such a watch to see what is actuallt meant, Cory… Plus the tactile element I can see it adding are (to my mind) brilliant!

5 stars and Yes (I’m hoping was registered) from my direction

    • Well, you know when you put a straw into a glass of water, and it looks as if the straw is broken in two at the water’s surface? Glass has a similar effect when it is curved. depending on the density and thickness of the glass, the effect can be more or less pronounced.

The LEDs are curved, so when viewed at odd angles, the curve of the glass will refract the light in much the same way that the water does to a straw in your drinking glass. When viewed straight on (as in the ANIM1 ) the curve of the LED and glass match up, so the refraction is minimized, and more easily viewed.

      Hope this helps 😀

  4. Some time before, I did need to buy a car for my organization but I didn’t have enough cash and couldn’t buy something. Thank heaven my comrade proposed to try to take the loan at trustworthy creditors. Therefore, I did so and used to be satisfied with my sba loan.

  5. I really really like the concept!!! The ripple effect is sooo nice! The wavy but still manly and edge straps rock. I like the watch so much, that a detail of the display bugs me. The circle segments could be rounded, more liquid. And the four bubbles should be concentric circles, something that’s not that much different. Make it LCD on a blue reflective base layer to be always on and the water theme is transported perfectly, for me 🙂 Good work and good luck!

  6. I like the idea of using glass refraction and the drop effect. There is an outta space technology feel to it that suits me 🙂 So I like the display (the drops in the center could be used differently but that’s not a big modification, if needed). The shape of the watch is not my cup of tea, too organic, or to curved maybe, but there is a lot of work on it, I must recognize, really detailed, good job !

  7. Thanks Sam, Thanks Nico!

There seems to be consensus of a change to the center of the display, I’ll try and flesh out a couple alterations that stay true to the “water droplet” idea. Stay tuned! Hoping this is an improvement 😉

I like the fluid and curvy look, as well as some of the more straight/angular stuff too. Good point, Nico!

Hmmm… an always on LCD version… Gears turning!
