Time in 3D Pins Watch Design

Design submitted by Peter from UK.

The idea for this watch design was inspired by the executive pin art toy where metal pins make a 3D representation of any object pushed into them.

When the sides of the rubber bracelet are squeezed (no visible buttons), pins on the front face are actuated/animated.  The pins stick out to create a 3D representation of either a digital or analog time display.  The pins could also be illuminated for extra clarity.

  1. love it. i don’t know how practical it is to make it, but it’s pretty cool. i would use the digital setting for sure, and i love the option for illuminating the pins – especially at night or in the dark. 5*/YES!!!!!!!!!!!! from me if it’s possible to be made. 😀

  2. This is surely a conversation starter for ladies. I’m not a lady, so not sure, but since Heather likes it, I guess its probably a good flashing watch for woman. For analog time, you need to put smaller and extra pins.

    • I agree this one is more likly to appeal to Ladies. I agree that a higher resolution (smaller and more pins) would be better for both display styles, but I figured I was pushing what is possible already.
      Thanks for the feedback! 🙂

  3. very good design, the problem is this watch is gonna be very fragile with the tendency to lose pieces over time, could be designed to use Electromagnetism to move the parts.

  4. Besides minor issues (TF would take care of clasp and a protective frame and covering glass) and the bigger issue of feasability (I can also be utopic, so I don’t make a big deal of it here, hehehe) I love this watch! I have a pin art board here for ages and it was fascinating when I was a teen and it’s still wonderful to look at. I support this design cause it’s basically simple and unlike any watch design I saw before.

The digital time is cool. If it cannot be made with light, it’s still awesome. Battery life… Changing states of electromanets is not much more energy draining than changing states of liquid chrystals I think… I hope 🙂 Maybe the time hasn’t to be changed everytime. Maybe the last shown time stays until a button is pressed. An invisible one, hehehe.

The analog time would only work/look good in definite times. I also tried a hexagonal grid based analog time and it’s not always this clear…

Anyway, design has no barriers, only production has. I like the design and it’s worth to be pulled into reality.

    • I was hoping if it ws possible to have the pins exposed so you could also feel the time, might be beneficial to people with limited eye sight etc. I went down the rubber bracelet route but with have to issues with a clasp or more traditional strap. Hopefully TF have ways and means of making these kinds of things possibe.
Thanks for the support and the critique Sam 🙂

  7. Pete, I like the originality of the reading, but I also like the look when it is finalized, it helps to better see the finished project and I know you’re capable of doing, like last time.

  9. Unique idea for sure! I wonder as well about the practicality and battery life but if those things weren’t an issue this would would make for a very awesome watch! Well done! 5* and YES.

  10. I think, as a concept, this watch would be brilliant. As far as logistics; that’s for engineers, not designers.
This watch speaks to its inspiration and has a fresh look.

  11. I also doubt the practicality but adore the design too. Although it looks like a girl’s bracelet, I would be tempted to but it. Great idea!

  12. I just don’t see this watch as a “watch” I like the idea and as a tf collector with many watches in my possession I don’t see this one being one I would pursue. Just my opinion. The expression less is more should be thought of more when thinking of concepts for these watches. Take the “pimp” models for examples. Very simple and classy and yet one of the top watches yet to be compared with.

    • Its perhaps not for everyone, seems to appeal more to the ladies. You also have to bare in mind that at this stage these are rough concepts that if chosen for development may well be tweaked and re-interpreted into a form that may appeal more to the majority. I personally am not a fan of the pimp models, but that is a personal taste matter. I thankyou for your honest comment. 🙂
