Anders says: “I’ve been wanting to do a design using e-paper, as well as one with a wrap-around display for some time. Also, I’ve wanted to use square displays more. It’s not until now however I’ve come up with a combination of these components in one idea I feel is strong enough.
The design features connected displays around the armband, with numbers displayed across the face of the watch on a hidden screen, making them customizable. The time is pointed to by animated elements shown on the display(s). To conserve energy, the screens are bi-stable, such as e-paper or cholesteric liquid crystal.
The real trick with this design is the display, which could show almost any image or animation (downloaded via a mini-USB port or Bluetooth). This means that it could appeal to almost anyone, since the wearer could choose their favorite theme. It also creates an aftermarket for custom display animations.
Beyond the possibility of buying alternative screen animations, wearers could make their own, making the potential for personalization effectively unlimited. This would appeal to anyone seeking a truly personal, easy to read time-piece, and should be a big draw for the hardcore tech-nerds out there. You know who you are.”

Just one question: Sizes vary from the wrist, the strap may be how to regulate?

A good question! =)
The easiest option I can think of is to make it possible to remove single links from the armband. Not the most elegant solution, and the watch would have to be able to adjust the graphics, but there aren’t that many other options… Not the most practical design, but not many designs are…=)

Totally right, many other concepts aren’t practical. The bolder the concept, the more impossible it seems. Let the feasability be tokyoflashs work. This concept rocks! Brilliant work man!

I believe there can be little power/information conduits wich work on touch contact, so you can remove single links. Or you make one quarter of the watch in links with a rigid pattern, without any electronics. The pattern would be like engraved into the metal and needs to blend into the changeable pattern. That non-electronic quarter would be the place to replace links. In favor of feasability, I think that would be a good compromise.
But actually Aphosno is right. It is a concept and like Tokyoflash wrote on top of the blog front page: Stimulate your mind, Design has no barriers. A watch is not all about function.
Ok, now away from the serious talking… I loooooove this design!!! That is the future of watches! I like the all-aroud-the-strap display in combination with the single links. I like the simplicity of the display – 0-9 and four hands! That’s it! I totally love the idea of being able to make your own display style. With a little software, you can do anything!!! Man, I want that now 😦 🙂 Does it have light? At leas at the case? Would be wise 😀 Great design Anders, really really!

Yeah, it shouldn’t be impossible to have little connectors between the links to be able to remove them… The problem then is to make the graphics fit… But that would be TF’s problem…=)
Your suggestion about all-metal links could work, but it would defeat the purpose of the wrap-around display and the personalization…
Glad you like it! I thought it a good idea, especially the customizable display, but it’s always nice when people you respect agree with you…=)
As for lighting, well, the numbers would be backlit, being a hidden LCD display, and that light might be allowed to spill out at the ends of the display, just where the graphics meet the case… If it’s done in E-paper… An LCD option would be completely backlit, of course…

Very nice :), i would definitely buy this. I am a big fan of the ability to personalize the display to whatever end, also i love the idea of having the display wrap around your wrist instead of in one section.

To adjust the band length, I think if you made the face, where the numbers are, thin (as in thickness) and larger (above and below the numbers extending the face), say half or three quarters of a link on both sides, you could use the space under this larger face to allow for some play in the link length. If you need some extra link length, you would adjust so that more of the 2 links that are under the face are more exposed. To shorten a little, you would hide more of the 2 links under the face.

Really don’t understand why this isn’t at least 4.5 of 5 stars…
The technology behind it is unique, even if it seems hard to produce and a little fragile because of the many contacts
But if this thing works, then, i think we have the watch of tomorrow

Thanks Aphosno! One thing I’ve thought about the ratings here is that it would be interesting to be able to see how many votes have been given, and maybe even the distribution between 1-5… Not sure how much it complicates the coding, though…=)

I beg to differ (although it might very well turn out to be hideously expensive)…=) The frame-less display segments might be a bit optimistic (I’m not sure what sort of wiring an e-paper display needs), but otherwise it wouldn’t be terribly complicated… The graphic split over several displays isn’t difficult, running the connections between the links should be fairly easy, too… the most complicated thing, as other posters have pointed out, would be how to adjust the size of the strap, but that is solveable as well…

Skulls are pretty frightening! haha! Would not wear the skull version but the drawings are really impressive!!
I wonder if it is technically reasonable to cut the e-ink on each link though.
Otherwise it’s one the design I like the best from you!

I wanted to push the design a bit from my usual sober deco-ish style to something a bit more grafitti, a bit more ‘street’, and show that you could have any graphic you could imagine…
Yeah, as I said in my reply to vanszagen above, the frame-less displays is the thing I’m unsure about (since I don’t know enough about e-paper and what sort of wiring it needs), but there might be other alternatives…

Ich denke nicht, es sollte so lange auf die Zeit erzählen, nehmen Sie da vier Indikatoren deutete auf eine Stelle sind jeweils. Das Schwierigste wäre zu erfahren, in welcher Reihenfolge sie zu lesen …
