(English) Stylux watch (update)
December 21st, 2011
(English)
Design submitted by Laszlo from Hungary.
This mechanical watch design would require a large case and a reliable locking mechanism to ensure the cylinders lock on to the correct time. Three cylinders would rotate to reveal the time by digits (hours, 10 minute group and single minutes). A steampunkesque concept that would look incredible on your wrist.

Sam’s initial idea was to create an ever changing display which works with interference (short term change coming from the second hand) and color change (long term change coming from the hour and minute hands). Halftone is actually a technique used in printing. It works like an LED screen – it simulates any color by just using a few. The difference from a LED screen is that it’s not limited to a rectangular grid. The few colors of cyan, magenta, yellow (and black too) are applied in tiny dots. From a certain distance, this dot pattern cannot be seen anymore and the basic colors seem to mix to the final motif. Read the rest of this entry »

The idea for this watch design was based on traditional sundials and the lack of sun in the UK. Peter thought that it would be novel to replace the light source but use the traditional method of telling the time using shadows. Read the rest of this entry »

Sam says: “I was sketching for a bracelet-like watch with a cornered spiral as eye-catcher. After experimenting with the shape and the time reading layout for a bit, I continued my work in 3D. I had this image of a staircase in my mind from the start and that’s why I let the spiral go deeper and deeper in the material”. Read the rest of this entry »

Time is told like an analog watch. The outer band of lights represent the hours, the second band of lights represent 5-minute intervals, and the inner band represent single minutes. The light in the center lights up when the is PM. Read the rest of this entry »

Peter says: “I wanted to come up with a single hand analog watch that uses 3D to display the time. I decided that the minutes would be shown in a conventional manner and the hours would be in a vertical plane. I looked into a means of maneuvering the single hand in both a rotational manner and up and down for the hours. The rotor arrangement of a helicopter fitted the bill. I then used this as a bit of a theme for the styling of this watch.” Read the rest of this entry »
