Invader LED watch with chevron display

Design submitted by Peter from the UK.

Peter says: This is the third and final instalment….or is it a prequel? of the model used to create “Stealth II” and “3Delix” a long long time ago in a galaxy near the west midlands in good old blighty. It occurred to me that the chevron shaped segmentation on this model was slightly reminiscent of the arches of the Sydney Opera House. So I decided to create this 12-5-9 format watch based on this inspiration.

Although the inspiration was based on the well know landmark the result is more sci-fi than architectural. It reminded me a little of the chin pieces of Storm Trooper’s and Darth Vader’s helmets. Hence the highly creatively name “InVader”. The time is told in classic 12-5-9 format using the three chevron shaped displays.

This design has a sci-fi feel and alien look so willl hopefully appeal to the more adventurous and the TF hardcore fans. That said in the right materials could be deemed elegant enough for some ladies to see it more like bracelet than a watch.

The shape and general sci-fi feel combined with up-market looking finishes could set this design apart from others.

  1. In my eyes it has an almost armour like quality, like lights shining through plate mail or some alien carapace.
I really like the overall simplicity, easy to read time telling with a very unique construction.
The bracelet/fashion element is a great angle I think & something I hope TF can explore.

    • Cheers for posting and commenting Toky! Yeah for me it is armour like too, which is a theme I keep getting drawn too. I imagine this kind of shape/layout makes the module more tricky than a conventional one but hopefully still feasible/viable etc. fingers crossed exploration is possible 😀

  2. It’s look and the way the lights are shown remind me of a technology that an alien in the predator series (movies) would use.
This watch being both cool for it’s sci-fi inspiration and slick dark design and the easy yet intriguing form of telling time make it highly interesting for me if I ever were to buy myself a watch.

    • I like the sci-fi and predator association. Predator is one of my all time favourite film beasties. I’m glad you likey and cheers for the support! 😀

  3. I usually don’t like counting small LEDs of same color arranged in a row. but here, because of the chevron shape and the symmetry, its easy to read.
I also had the ‘Predator’ reminiscent, especially looking at the green 12:59 version.

BTW: how a 12-5-9 watch displays 2 minutes after midnight – 12-0-2 or 0-0-2 ? as European I find 12-something awkward. maybe TF can implement a pseudo 24h mode that would show the hour after midnight with no LEDs at the hour-chevron.

I like it and would definitely consider to by one.

    • With a 12-5-9 display it makes sense to show your time example as 12-0-2, 0-0-2 could be as easily shown but would make the twelfth LED unnecessary (11/5/9) but if 24hr format was an option like you say it could shown as 0-0-2 to signify am status. Alternatively the display could go into a negative mode at midnight and the lights could turn off to show the passing of time. Might be more confusing but would give the watch two moods. I’m sure TF could iron out these kind of details if the design got to that stage. Cheers for the feedback and support! <<< 😀

      • hi Pete,
even with 0-0-0 for midnight you need 12 hour LEDs, as noon still is 12-0-0. so, if you wake up as prey in a dark holding cell of a Predator vessel, you could tell if you can expect something for lunch soon or to better get some more hours of sleep before morning terror starts. 😀

  4. I loved this when I saw it on your PF Design page. Much as I like the other two designs, this is the best by far – an absolute must-have.
As you know, I don’t like counting the LEDs stacked together, unless there is an easy way to differentiate (like the gaps every third etc) – here that’s achieved with the different sized triangles. Perfect!
I always like green on black (must be a cast back to dumb terminals in the 80’s), so no surprise that looks great to me, but so do the others – it will be hard to decide which to buy.
Looking forward to wearing one – good luck and, of course, 5y.

    • Like with other 12/5/9 designs this could easily have alternate colour or maybe flashing 3,6,9 for extra clarity if it were needed. Hopefully the shape of the LEDs is enough. Yeah black and green is classic, I supose its reminicent of early computer displays. I must be a secret AMSTRAD fanboy 😉

  7. Slick work as always Pete, looks like you’ve still got it. =)

Some interesting shapes there, to be sure, although I’m not sure if it would appeal more to women or men (not that it matters)… =) A small note on the shape; I think I’d like it more if there was a bevel on the edge of the case; as it is it looks a bit too ‘sharp’ for me. But that’s just my opinion…

It’s an interesting take on the good ‘ole 12-5-9, and the shape of the displays means that it’d work very well as a driver’s watch. Is that deliberate? =)

Good work, and best of luck mate!

    • Deliberate he asks? You bet your Volvo it’s deliberate! Lol. I see what you mean about softening the outer edges. I’m sure a chamfer or a small rad could be added without effecting the look too much. Yeah good old 12/5/9, if it ain’t broke don’t fix it 🙂 cheers for the support sir! 😀

  8. Really need one of these in my life, my rogue touch is cool but having a few issues nowadays so i’m looking for a cool replacement and this fits the bill!

TF It’d be great if you got this one done, I hate seeing cool watches like the Vertebrae go missing in the pages and not end up on the store!

All the best of luck Pete 🙂

    • Cheers for the support Zarconite and the Vertebrae mention! Yeah it has somewhat got forgotten in the midst of time. But as Toky’s latest production watch show even the older blog submissions still get considered. Fingers crossed one if these designs makes into reality 🙂

      • You’ve had loads of fantastic submissions that should get made, Pete. My favourites, at the moment, are:
        Vertebrae
        Incognito
        Batiodea
        Invader
        Mercury
        Reticle
        LiveWire
Surely some of these will make it.

      • Crikey that’s quite a list! Thanks for having multiple favourites, must be doing something right!?! Whether any of them are worth of production is anyone’s guess. I wouldn’t like to bet my money on it that is for sure hehe. Hopefully Toky will be charitable to me again one day 🙂 cheers again Nev! 😀
