Insular LED watch has robotic column of lights

Peter says: I had an image in my head for a semi-organic shaped watch with a narrow LED display. The image had a alien robot kind of look which was industrial but not too aggressive in its language. “Insular” was the outcome.

The design revolves around a narrow vertical LED array that has a kink in it. This could be purely in the lens or the actual array could have a bend in it. This display would be able to display the time in either digital or 12/5/9 formats. These time telling methods could have different styles including snake like joined up styles. The display could be used in negative too. This array would also allow for robotic like animations.

This design has a futuristic feel and should appeal to the dedicated TF fans. The time telling is conventional enough to appeal to the main stream.

The narrow LED display in conjunction with the semi-organic robotic like form seperates this design from others.

  2. Cylonically cool concept Peter! Definitely something special. I can imagine the animated display… very sci-fish :9 The ridge could be 50% this high. Gave ya 5*/YEP

    • Yeah the shape could be much more subtle if needed and still retain the feel of this concept. I could imagine it making that woo woo noise like KIT out of night rider as the LEDs animate from one end to the other! 😉 cheers for the vote Sam! 😀

  4. I agree with Sam about the height of the display. As it is now it looks a little bit goofy (but still very cool), and as you say it would work more subtly as well.

    I like the idea of creasing the display in just one direction. I’d be tempted to make it symmetrical, but this works a lot better, both aesthetically and from a readability standpoint as well.

    Oh, and I also thought ‘Cylon’ when I saw it…=)

  5. Hi Pete, your project looks like a dinausaure to peak, as a “Parasaurolophus”.
    The fact that this peak is well marked adds character to your watch.
    For my part, I would not change anything.
    I wanted to congratulate you on your stay in conceptual line, because you do not try to think of a watch that will be made, but you follow your imagination and desire, without mercantile calculations, it is worth reading!
    Yes, maybe I’m weird, but I love this watch.

    As Samukun and Anders, I first thought about Cylon when I saw it, but it’s more different !

    And as them, I must say that maybe not so much a big shape would be good, just for the pratical aspect, not to hang your watches to something when passing near a wall for example.

    I Particularly like the copper one ! 🙂

    And, a suggestion for an other display mode : continuous time :
    More than having 3 groups of 2 leds on for meaning 3 hours for example : just get all the led of the hour row switched on, with a led off every 3 leds. Get an arrow for both : hours, ten minutes and minutes.
    And all the led continuously animated going down 🙂
    Do you understand what I mean ?

    • Hello Shana, I am more than happy with the Cylon association as I am a bit of a sci-fi fan! 😉 Yeah the general consensus seems to be a lower more subtle profile, which is cool with me. I like the distressed looking metal finishes myself. Lets hope TF are brave enough to use such finishes one day, maybe as a limited edition of a design etc.

      I like the idea of the continuous time mode suggestion, especially its animated nature. Power consumption limitations allowing of course.

      • Well, may be the continuus time mode can juste activate the display every minutes or something like that, for a few seconds. 🙂
        The idea was not to get the time permanently lighted but at animated way to display time, as a animation, not able to be understood by people who don’t know 🙂

  8. I like the dorsal fin idea Pete. Not so keen on the numbers. The watch reminds me a bit of “Fire”. 😉 Anyway I gave you 5Y.

    • Interesting similarity/association, I would have never thought of fire. I guess different people see different things. I like the dorsal fin description! That makes it sound cool. I think the narrow matrix type display would offer a few options regarding time displays. So I think there is room for expansion and development. Cheers for the support sir! 😀

  9. It does look interesting, but would only work for me if the ridge was, as Sam suggests, half the height. Red display is the best, probably due to the Cylon look.

    • Yeah the overall hight seems to the biggest issue for most. I would have no issues with a shallower profile if the concept was taken further. Cheers for the feedback sir’ 😀
