Heather says: My brother thought up the phrase “SPLIT SECOND”, and this concept was born.  I thought, maybe I can make a display that is mostly seconds, but split them in half so there is constant movement on a large portion of the display.  Then I made the hours and minutes smaller and squeezed them in between the top and bottom of the seconds.

The hours and minutes are displayed in the center portion of the hexagonal display, and the seconds are split so that the top halves of the digits are displayed above the hours and minutes, and the bottom halves are shown below

This is a slim unisex watch for those who prefer a read at a glance cryptic display that attracts attention with constant movement.

The focus on seconds and the catchy name “SPLIT SECOND” which matches the theme help this design stand out from others on the blog.

  1. Good idea Heather! I like the simplicity and boldness of the display. I’m not quite friends with some of the porportions, and I’d very much like to see more done with the case. Although I understand that the display is the star of the show. Other than these little niggles, all thumbs up from me, and keep them coming!

    • Thanks, Anders! Yeah, after I finished, I realized I might want to change the proportions a little, but it was too hard to change one part without starting over, so I left it alone, and just hoped people would get the main idea. 😉 Thanks for the thumbs up!

      • I hear ya, that’s happened to me enough times…=) I suppose it’s because I get too eager and don’t sketch everything out properly first, leaving it for a while and then coming back to it to really iron out the kinks. Instead I just jump into 3DS Max and/or Illustrator and start winging it. =)

  2. I like it, bold and simple with constant animation. The only change I would make to the display is to reduce the thickness of the bottom blocks of the top half of the seconds and the top blocks of the bottom half of the seconds. I think they should be half the thickness of the others so it looks like the seconds have been cut in half by the hours and minutes. Minor details aside 5/Y best of luck Heather! 😀

    • Hey, Pete! I agree about exactly that same adjustment. That’s what I wanted to change when it was all done, but it would have been too much work to redo the rest, so I just left it. At least the concept still comes across just fine. Thanks for the support!

  6. Heather, this is my FAVORITE design of yours to date! I love the different sizes of segments together, especially love the last inverse white on black scheme; it looks like a industrial design concept sketch. It appears that the case is not a true hexagon with equal sides–if not, would you consider making it a true hex? Regardless, 5*/yes!

    • Wow! What a compliment, xian! Thanks so much for your enthusiastic support! The “appearance” of not being a regular hexagon is not intentional – it was just me not knowing how to use the stupid polygon tool correctly. 😉 It should have all equal sides. Thanks for the vote!

    • People are strange, as someone wrote…

      I think (like mushy said) often it depends on how people are feeling that particular day. I know how I get when the blood-sugar drops…=)

      It’s a psychological thing (can’t remember the name for it); it’s easy to forget that other people aren’t rational and consistent. I suppose we’ll have to hope that it evens out eventually. =) Like my scores, I think if I keep making ’em, sooner or later I’ll hit the bulls-eye.=)
