Infrared MKII: The Space Marines Watch.

Peter says: This is “Infrared MkII” a digital LED watch. I am a big fan of the Predator movies and was always fascinated by the Predator’s vision modes. I decided to design a watch inspired by the Infrared theme.

The time is told by traditional digits displayed by a multi-coloured array of LEDs. The LEDs imitate an Infrared look, the glass is frosted and patterned to help blend the colours and diffuse the display. The digits could be “hot or cold” depending on the time of day or the users preference. The surrounding area around the digits getting perspectively “hotter or colder” in contrast. The colour modes could be cycled through like the vision modes of the Predator. When not in use the display can be covered (turning off the LEDs) by the two sprung loaded shutters. When the time is needed again a button will release the shutters allowing them to slide open in a sci-fi fashion.

This design has a striking and industrial feel. This should help it appeal to the big kids out there and the sci-fi fans. The rubber strap is clad in armour plates to give the watch a post-apocalyptic feel that may also appeal to film buffs too.

The armoured exterior and bright LED display sets this concept apart form others.

  1. I am having a hard time deciding which model I like best.
    Do I go with the clean one; freshly issued to a new recruit in delta wing.
    The dark one; imperial commandos edition.
    or am i a space pirate wanted in 12 systems.

    • Hehe excellent comment Zed! Yeah would be a tricky choice. I guess if you chose the clean one you could always customise to suite your particular battalion or rank etc.

  2. I like the design, especially the one with time 15:32. It looks beautiful.
    I’m not so sure about the digits however, it’s a bit too regular, I would expect something more post-apocalyptic biohazardous…
    But other than that very nice!

    • Hi Vonkie, I get what you mean. The digits are quite regular in this example but the LED array would allow a variety of time telling methods. Also the display isnt as diffused as I would like (there is only so much I can do in my CAD proggy) so imagine the digits more blended like a real Infrared image. Cheers for the feedback! 😀

  5. Hi Pete, it is indeed difficult to choose his favorite model, I like the one with the carbon fiber, but I also like the worn metal.
    The black and yellow stripes give this design a clear legitimacy.

  7. This watch must be made! I’d prefer it not have the yellow stripes which makes it look a bit like a novelty watch not to be worn everyday.

      No worries the warning chevrons could easily just be a contasting finish or etched in the existing finish etc. Im glad you like the concept, cheers for the comment! 😀

      • Hey, Pete! Ever since Jim Cameron’s Aliens I have been a sucker for the OSHA yellow/black stripes. I love all of your designs here. I’m also a Predator fan (did not like the Adrian Brody one storywise 😦 ) and was just listening to the original Arnold film soundtrack last night while I worked. Bottom line: must.be.made.

      • Yeah Im a bit of a fan of both those franchises (have quite a collection of figures and polystone busts etc)
        They are a great source of inspiration and Im more than happy with any association. The alarm buzzer could make that air-lock opening warning sound like on the “Sulaco” or the much reveered self destruct sound of preddy’s wristware. Cheers for the support! 😀

    • The intention is that a button would realease the shutters which would be sprung biased towards the open position (there was a nokia phone made famous by the matrix films a few years back which had a similar idea with a cover over the keys that was sprung loaded). Then the wearer would manually re-close them arming it for the next time. The closing of the shutters would turn off the display to save power.

  9. That would be awesome. If a tension bar or partial coil were used,like those found in assisted opening knives, for the mechanism it could help keep the profile slim. Maybe I’m over thinking it? 🙂

    • All input is very welcom Mike, I must admit to not worrying too much about the technical aspects as TF will have their own thoughts and methods (should they choose to develop an idea futher) but it certainly doesnt hurt to suggest ways and means just incase it suggests a better result. The simplest way mignt be just a compression spring in the grove that the covers slide in and a simple latch. Cheers for the feedback 😉

  10. OK, looks like Pete put out another cool-looking design… WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOW.
    this is just what went on in my mind.
    Nice job again! 5Y as always!
    just wondering something, do you use Solidworks for the main 3D design and then modify the looks of it with Photoshop or a similar program?
    because you are doing an awesome job at everything you do!
    keep up the good job man!
    also, I like the 2nd and 3rd design best (can’t design which I like best though :D).

    • Hey Digits, most of what you see is in Solidworks and its built in render package. I sometimes tweak basic things in photoshop, add blur, change colours and saturation (repair mistakes) etc but the bulk is in the CAD. Mostly for the principle of if it can be done in the CAD it should be doable in the real-world. It was very tempting to create the screen displays in photoshop to get the diffusion I would have liked for example, but I wanted to see if I could get the desired effect by frosting and adding the pattern to the glass. It kinda works but I think would be better in real-life (should TF decide to develop it of course x^^x) Cheers for the compliment and the support! 😉

      • Have you used the decals options yet. Depending on what version you have there should be a “photoworks” menue which allows you to select parts/faces and apply images directly to the model. The battle scarred metallic finish you see here is just a jpeg image applied to the surface of the model combined with a stock metal material (from the appearances menue) which dictates the material qualities, reflectivity, texture etc. Very easy to do but can make a big difference. 😀

  11. Now this I like! =) The metal links on the strap is an idea I’ve toyed with, but this looks better than what I’ve come up with. I really like the shutters, simple but effective, and I think the warning chevrons are a nice finishing touch. Cool (excuse the unintended pun) idea with the IR display; the diffusing lens is a really clever idea. If there’s one thing I’d change it would be the numbers. I’d like to see something as evocative as the rest of the design. But as you say, the LEDs allow for alternative methods. Perhaps a higher resolution, and some sort of animation (like something seen through targetting optics)? Top work anyway!

    • Yeah fair comment about the numbers/display style. I thought about more smaller LEDs so that the numbers could be more organic as would the surrounding heat haze colours, but figured I was already pushing what is possible. I like the idea of the animation that would be hot 😉 If I get 5 mins I might see if I can come up with an alternative display using the existing array. Cheers for the great feedback Anders! 😀

    • Hi George, I’m glad you like it! Thanks! Unfortunately it is merely at concept at this stage, if TF decide to make it will take a while before it would be available for purchase. So fingers crossed they choose to make and it doesn’t take too long! 😉
