Oscope watch tells time via waves

Sam says: The inspiration for this concept comes from oscilloscopes. I like the imagination of having something scientific on my wrist.

The display shows a green x- and y-axis on a black background. Once a button is pressed, a green, slightly horizontally moving graph shows up. It’s mostly a sine curve. Its number of maximums on the screen indicates the current hour, 1 – 12.

The maximum function value (the projection of the upper apexes on the positive y-axis) indicates the current ten minute increment, 0 – 50.
The minimum function value (the projection of the lower apexes on the negative y-axis) indicate the additional minutes, 0 – 9.

If it’s currently a full hour and there wouldn’t be a function value of an apex on the y-axis, the time is told by tangent graphs. Their amount tells the hour. When the button is pressed twice, the date is shown in the same manner (hours -> months, minutes -> days). Below the activating button is a little navigation stick. Left/right influences the horizontal movement speed of the graph. If a spectacular effect is wished, it can be set fast. If the time needs to be read, it should be slow or not moving at all. With some practice, a moving graph can be read. Moving the stick up and down controls the brightness of the display. After ten seconds of leaving the stick alone, the display deactivates. A quick deactivation can be enforced by pressing the upper button again. An animation option can be chosen which makes the watch oscillate randomly. Holding the button for 5 seconds activated setting mode which requires the navigation stick.

This is a geeky but clean watch for science fans, be it science fiction, their hobby or their job.

Oscope does not only look confusing in terms of time telling, but also cool. Once the miracle is revealed, time can be told easily. Influencing the oscillation adds some reading challenge for those who wish.

  1. Great concept, great execution. Reminds me of some of the classic Eleeno designs. I really like the brighter/darker/faster/slower control, that adds a lot.

    I see this got a “TFT” tag, and I hope that means it’s feasible. I tried to design something similar using a segmented LCD, but couldn’t make it look right.

      Oh the TFT tag is a concession from Tokyoflash. When I made it, I knew it cannot be a 100% fluent curves so I used a pixel matrix that hopefully can be made somehow 😉

  3. Looks nice, has that retro futuristic feel like the tracking device in the alien movies.
    I struggle to read the minutes, maybe there could be an easy mode with more obvious markers or numbers.

  12. Comming from an avid electronics hobbyist, I can honestly say that I LOVE this design! Very original, and the level of geekyness it would take to wear this in public could not be graphed on the watch.
    I would certainly reccomend darkening the fifth line in various places in order to make it easier to read, and the buttons look like they could easily be pushed by accident. There should prabobly be some kind of notification on the face when you switch to the date mode, to avoid confusion.
    That’s about all of the constructive criticism I can think of right now, I REALLY hope this one goes through!

  16. What kind of an idiot designed this watch and why would someone wear this kind of watch?? People are blessed to have normal analog and digital watches, which are beautifully designed and have multiple functions (this looks crap) and one even gets a watch with countdown timer, alarm etc. in a cheap mobile phone.

    If someone, in emergency wishes to check the heart rate or stuff like that, how would they do it?

    How is this shit even smarter than an old, tension bound, coiled church tower clock??Being a degarati, I certainly find this a big crap which is not worth anything at all. Just wasting time and money!!!

    When time is counted in nano seconds, we don’t need a swinging shit that displays it in wavelengths that are to be counted and measured.

    One more thing, your English is extremely pathetic, just like your article!!

      Noone really needs such a watch, agreed. It’s entertainment and that’s subject of taste. Arguing about taste is so medieval. Take it of leave it.

      Hey, english is not my native language (as if it’s your business) but you should be a tad more tolerant. At least you should run a spell check before you accuse others of their language.
