Sam Says: The inspiration for this watch comes from a cylinder watch I made years ago from a normal battery clockwork. I wanted to make an analog wrist watch which shows the time on the outer edge of the case, not on the top.

I sketched some cases but my final idea came from the mechanism, which is used by my digital camera to keep and release the memory card (a “push to release” mechanism with the same effect is also used by ball pens).

I created a hollow case which keeps the “time capsule” and reveals it my pressing it’s top. I chose a neutral fashionable flexible metal bracelet and a sci-fi inspired time display.

Time reading is very easy. When the capsule is exposed to eye-sight, it shows two arrays of numbers and a vertical indicator in the middle. The top array stands for the hours, the bottom one stands for the minutes.

I like the bracelet when the capsule is sunk. It looks like a watch but where is the time? What I also like is that it looks like you want to remove the fusion energy cell of your gadget, when you press the circle. That’s why I used colored glass to surround the time rings – the revelation experience is stronger.

This watch is a fashion accessory on the one hand and a geeky watch on the other hand. So everyone who likes subtle sci-fi, might like this watch.

      Yeah it’s older than the COAL’N’ACID and the ON LINE and about as old as the RGB². You know I was afraid it’s too old by now, but a good design doesn’t die that quickly. I think this one is timeless (see a pun if you like) and ready for the future, woohoo 😀

  11. That is great…..no scrap that………..that is awesome….er….no hang on….that….is…phenomenal! I had a watch when i was a kid (well, about 18 years old) that i bought from a guy on a street corner in London. The time was hidden and it popped up. I thought i was the coolest kid on the block. Sadly one day it broke and ever since there has been a hole in my life. THIS WATCH would fill that void! 😀 (that is actually a true story).

      • Nope I’ve looked everywhere. I thought it was an Android Alien watch but it wasn’t. It had 2 small pistons to open the lid. Like i said it was off some random bloke selling them on the street. I think it only cost me about £30…..and broke within a couple of months! 😦

  12. Great idea love it although you should make some color difrences between the strap and the “time capsule” secondly you should name it Time Capsule and lastly how do you set the time!?!?!??!?!?!?!?

    • Thank you Jared for your words! Good question 🙂 The time setting thingies would have to be in the time capsule, independent from the case that stores it. So I would suggest the time setting button to be on the capsule’s bottom, where the access to the battery would also be. Both could be accessed behind the screw cap on the bottom of the case. There are quartz movement watches that don’t have a mechanical setting mechanism, so a simple button is a possibility.

      Color differences sound interesting. What would you have in mind?

      • You know what would be really cool in regard to the time setting, you rotate the capsule “x” degrees to an hour setting possition, you then press the button down to advance an hours, you would then rotate the capsule again to another postion to set the mins, then rotate the capsule back to the time telling postion to exit settings. This way you fully utilise the push-push mech and it would be a real gadget with no intrusive buttons etc.

      • Woof, if that could be done – epic! Maybe the watch is settable automatically when it’s open. When it sticks out, you could set it right away. Then you must watch out, not rubbing yourself on big teddies in order to keep the correct time though. Hm, it would be like an analog watch’s crown. You would have to pull the capsule out a bit more to set the minutes (the hours will comply) and then push it back down. Then it’s in the casing again and next time you push it, it pops up in the time telling position again.

    Michael, I’m using 3ds Max and Photoshop. There are many ways how to reach this goal Blender for example is a free 3D program alternative. It’s not easy but if you know what you want, you know how to search forums or tutorials.

  18. Definitely a unique design concept. This is thinking outside the cylinder instead of the box. I would love to have this as part of my collection. It would be a marvel if it can be made. I’ll cross me fingers that they do find a way to make it.

    • Oh that would look reptilian 😉 Thank you for the suggestion. I think the inner material of the bracelet can be made in many different materials. Doing so, material and cylinder color can be made fitting to a theme.

  20. I like it. The 2 turning disks are so nice that I don’t care about readability problem, if there was any. I like the look when it’s off. I don’t like the lines on the band. ( the only negative point ) I would buy the red # on black display or the black # on red display. ( pictures # 9 and 1 )
