Peter says: This is “Hypercube” an analogue format LED watch. I wanted to come up with a simple LED watch that tells the time in an analogue style.

The trouble with all LED watches is that when the display is off they can look very plain. I wanted to design a watch that looks good on or off. I decided to use a faceted geometric  cube shape that looks somewhere between architecture and jewellery.

The time telling method is a simple analogue format not disimilar to the one employed by RPM.

The outer ring of facets displays the minutes in 5 minute blocks where you would expect to see them on a traditional analogue face. The hours are displayed by the inner ring of facets again like a conventional analogue face. There are four single minute blocks and a PM indicator in the centre of the display in a cube like form. The LEDs give the choice of positive and negative displays with a multitude of animations. The positive mode would offer longer battery life.

There is also a “Wire” version where the gaps between the facets are illuminated to frame the appropiate blocks that tell the time.

The form of this watch is inspired by the simple geometry of a cube, using 3D facets to display the time giving the watch a jewelry look. The proportions should suite all wrist sizes and are aimed at the unisex market. This design suites a multitude of LED colours and materials giving this watch a mass appeal.

This design stands out due to its 3D faceted form and use of conventional technology.

Giving it mass appeal and a good dollop of viability!

  2. Very good design, I love the geometry display. The center cube reminds me of Kaaba in Mecca (maybe because I’m too familiar with the shape) and the overall geometry is really identical to Islamic arts. Nevertheless, I believe that is not what you tried to manifest, but I really like the result. 5*!

    • Thanks a lot Firdaus, yeah the simularity with the Islamic arts wasnt intentional. Im not really familer with that geometry. Perhaps that will help this appeal to a broad market. Im glad you likey, cheers for the feedback and the vote! 😀

      It would be really nice if they could both be used on the same watch like modes, probably adding to the complication a little but would be nice for the wearer to choose. Cheers for the comment Leonard! 🙂

      I cant see the link with the wipeot game, buts is a cool association!
      I have contemplated designs based on the imagery of wipeout funnily enough lol
      I think this one has a balance between style, substance and feasibilty (hopefully TF will feel the same x^^x)

  12. The two dimensional light areas on a 3 dimensional interpretation of a four dimensional object is super geeky and good looking. I’d like to have this cause it’s not flat and HEXAGONY♥ I like how much is going on there but how contained it is – the exact opposite to your HUD idea. The wire ones look great and the one you use as your profile pic (mind the date, when you read this in 4 weeks, Pete might have another one) cause the LEDs look more realistic there. Well, realism back’n’forth, even if it were a sketch, I’d be convinced by this idea. The time reading can’t be easier: outer, inner, center – piece of cake. 5*/YES sir.

      Big thanks regarding the “WIRE” version as this was Sam’s suggestion after seeing earlier images on my FB page.
      So qudos to you sir!
      Yeah the new images are lights shining thu glass so have a more natural look and adds to the jewelry facet theme (ideal for ladies etc)
      hehe 4 weeks lol, 4 days may be more realistic lol!
      Yeah the time reading doesnt get much easier or intuative.

  13. I dig this design on several levels. The hex, the angles of the face, the mirror quality and it fits together nicely, is easy to tell the time.

    I prefer the positive facet style where the hour is colour & the rest is left blank/mirror (as in the white/green renderings) but thats just my taste.
    I think its best to avoid flashing segments though. Flashing is OK to attract attention to something but its best not to use it to convey information. I know we have watches that have done this before, in hindsight it makes it harder to read.

      Yeah I prefer the positive time telling too (in both facet and wire) I imagine that the facet version is the more feasible of the two. The positive time telling would also be the less power hungry I guess.
      Regarding the flashing topic Im more than happy to listen to your experience, I have no real preference (would be nice if you could choose between flashing and non-flashing)

      Do you think I should include a consecutively iluminated 12-5-9 version too (like you suggested on another design due for the blog) where if the hour is five, five LEDs are illuminated etc?

  18. I like the overall look and the time-telling method. I like the wire version and prefer positive to negative. I would like if the hours where placed at the outer ring and the 5 minutes where placed at the inner ring, to be closer to the 4 single minute. My favs are the green and the red.

    • I didnt realise the comments were still open ^^
      I placed the hours on the inside ring as this seemed more intuative as the hour hand on an analogue watch tends to be the shortest. But it would be nice if the user had the choice to invert the rings if they too have your preference. The green is probably my fav too so a fine choice sir! 😉
