HUD LCD watch: for your cyborg-future time telling needs.

Design submitted by Peter from the UK.

Peter says: This is “HUD” which stands for “Heads up Display”.

Watches utilising a transparent display are a popular concept and always have a futuristic look. The trouble with most of these concepts is that they dont fully utilise the transparency of the display, unless you like to admire your wrist through the display.

I decided it would be nice to be able to look through this transparent display, like a “heads up display” giving the technology more purpose.

The time telling method is  a conventional digital format and could include day, date etc and any other information that would be deemed useful. When the watch is orientated into a horizontal position the display flips so it can be viewed form the opposite side, for when it is connected to the supplied headset. The display features bluetooth connectivity so it can show other information via a smartphone or sat nav such as location or directions.

The display also features an eyelet for a supplied cord so the watch can be worn like a pendant.

The bracelet can be worn as jewelry when the display is removed and has a reserve battery for when the time display battery runs low. The bracelet also features a backlight and charging facility.

This design has a versatility that will hopfully appeal to a range of people. The styling had a futuristic feel which will appeal to those who like sci-fi. The option to wear as a pendant may appeal to the style concious and the option of wearing as a headset may appeal to the cyborgs amoungst us.

This concept stands out from others due to the variety of wearing methods, use of transparent display and heads up capability.

  1. A FANTASTIC to the max! I think the watch is too complicated, but I believe there’s no room to complain. 5* – epic work Pete….!
(ps: I’m certain the 11th who voted, so the prior 10 people, could you spend some time and explain your vote????)

  2. hey its a nice idea, but you really have to think about this. you can not just say that it will do all of these things and not have any real work behind it. its almost like a child’s idea. also, making an eyelet display like that is not just as simple as slapping a clear display a centimeter from your eye. your eye can not focus on things that closely without any kind of lens system. but then again i don’t think you really think this could be made by tokyflash, maybe you thought of it as just a fantasy idea.

    • Hi Inky,

I try to do a range of “concepts” for the blog, some fantasy and some more feasible. I dont have the technical knowledge to know what is possible nor do I know enough about TFs limitations to assume they can do or not do it (I am merely a fan that submitts concepts as a hobby) I imagine that it is not straight forward and may well require lenses etc like you mention. But it is merely a fun idea that could be developed into a more simple or feasible version should TF like the idea, style or theme. Im glad you like the basic premis and thankyou for your comment and feedback! 😀

  3. (I second Firdaus vote comment!)

I like the strikeyness (a word now) of this concept. It’s bold and cool. Personally, for me it’s a bit too playful. But I’m not the crowd and I think this watch would find customers from 15 til 35 – quite a couple hehehe. The HUD and pendant tranformations are great ideas sir.

I really dig the style – red, metal, textured matter. The look and the shapes are cool. Just a bit too chunky and eclectical. If anything could be done a little more unified, I’m in.

Another thing is the time reading system. It should be a little sci-fish at least. I made a design and mixed traditional elements like you have them with alien ones. If that’s cool, I don’t know, but here I think it would just rock to have some undecypherable things from the future going on 😉

Definitely 5* cause I see the customers and /MAYBE cause I think I’m growing on this (I really hope noone misunderstands this) Great work Pete, good luck!

    • Hi Sam, yeah I was a little lazy I guess with the actual screen image, I figured I was being too fanciful already with the various details. The design is on the chuncky side as I tried to make room for any (unknown) technology that may be required. I think if it had been paper thin it would have looked even less feasible, there is probably a halfway house between the current proportions and a sexy slim version.
Hopefully there some details that may apeal to TF if not the whole concept. Cheers as ever for the critique and the vote! 😀

  4. Thank you Inky. I like senses in your comment. I woud agree with most of your input but I also believe that theres element in this design that should not be taken lightly and would be inspiration to others. Seiko made the final fantasy watch, but not 100% functional as in the movie, though stil cool. Bandai sells kamen rider belt, though in real life that toy doesnt make you transform to rider. I like out of box mindset of pete, though there shoud not be a box, except during the manufacturing phase. Cheers! 😉

    • Thanks a lot Fir od da road! Yeah I sometimes veer away from the box too far on occaisions but I always figure that if you have an idea (however silly it may be) to air it as it may inspire something else or better.
Im sure not all of my suggested details are feasible but hopefully the feel of the thing will appeal. Like you say not all concepts are realistic but may lead to somethinbg that could be, I imagine that some vehicle designers who draw fantasitc flying cars and jet packs etc have that much knowledge of areonautical engineerings etc, but its nice to dream sometimes. Thanks for the great comment! 😀

  5. Awesome work Pete, but I’d have preferred it if the display was a bit more original. I gave it 5 stars and a yes because it looks cool. 🙂

    • Fair comment Mushy, like I mentioned to Sam, I was lazy as I had put too much fanciful details in already.
      Cheers for the support! 😀

  7. Terminator concept? Well, honestly…much too advance for me. And inky make some good points. Well, the concept overall is good futuristic but not my cup of tea. Don’t give up yet, Peter! Keep trying!

    • No worries Leonard, we cant please everyone all the time (tho I would make do with some people some of the time! hehe) Cheers for saying! 😀 (and oh yes sir I will keep trying 😉 )

  8. I would also like to know if I could make a request for this one. I would like to know more about it, if it is not too much trouble, would you be willing to put up a quick video just to show how it works? Thank you.

    • Hi Xander, thanks for the interest. This is just a concept at this stage and requires enough interest in the form of comments, votes, and shares/likes here on the blog to prompt TF to consider it for further development.
I have only submitted images at this stage, I didnt create an animation as the time telling method is pretty conventional and didnt require an animation to help describe it. The changing of the orientation of the display from portrait to landscape and flipping when in the “headset mode” could make a nice animation, if there was the need. Thanks again for the interest! 😀

Oh hey Pete! sorry i was just talking about my cook’s food now about that watch of yours, i absolutely love all the stuff you can do, mess around, and have fun with this watch! i also like hex and fiber texture added to it.when i saw and read about what this watch can do and what you cand do with it i felt like i was struck by a sort of rainbow! unlike the horrible food that was almost going to poison me, but if i could i wouldn’t give this a 5….. i would give this a 10!! 12. This H.U.D. Head up Display watch has a very futuristic look & style. However I would still like to make one suggestion for alternate version of this watch concept. What if Tokyo Flash where to work in corporation with a manufacturer of sunglasses? In order to take this design to the next logical stage & incorporate it in to a pair of sunglasses. In Black, Brown or Mirror wrap around style Sunglasses. Which could act as a Blue Tooth Headset / linked to a user’s Smart Mobile / Cell Phone or Other Blue tooth compatible device?
    What do you think?

    Like

    • Hehe yeah that sounds like a very cool propersition! I can certainly see some sense on having the expertise of the sunglasses manufacture on board. The other features you mention seem like a logical evolution of the concept. I think the trickiest part (besides the tech) would be how do you incorporate the separate display into the glasses but still allow it to be worn as the watch etc. perhaps the display would go on the inside of the glasses for a more subtle look. Certainly an interesting idea! Let’s hope TF want to take it to the next stage! Cheers for the feedback and the vote! 😀

      • Yeah there a few companies playing around with various tech in their products. I think the optics of the display are probably the biggest challange if TF were to take this further. But again there are companies out there doing this kinda thing so its got to be doable. Cheers for the interest and the link Andrew! 😀
