Lloyd & Peter say: We thought it would be amusing to create a watch that doesn’t actually display the time or date. That’s why this concept design is called “Timeout”.

Both the time and date are deduced by determining which one of the 10 digits (0-10) is missing from each of the 4 ring-shaped displays. So, for example, if the 4 missing digits, reading from top to bottom, are 1, 2, 4 and 7, the time would be 12:47. If you need to know the time or date in a hurry, just press the quick reveal button and it will immediately appear in the 4 circles at the centre of the rings.

A fun feature of this design is that the colour of the rings can be changed to suit your mood. This could be done manually or via a shuffle mode which would change the colour of the display randomly after a duration of time.

This watch is USB rechargeable and the design is available in a fun selection of different colours. The facia that frames the circular displays could also be interchangeable adding to the customisation.

This design would appeal to anyone who likes numbers, modern quirky things, creativity and thinking “outside the box”. The narrow proportions and slim line form will hopefully appeal to the wider audience and suit the majority of wrist sizes.

It stands out because of its unique modern design and original way of telling the time. This design is also based on LCD technology giving it a hint of viability.

  2. Awesome concept! The idea of displaying a watch where it doesn’t say the actual time is very unique, considering most ideas usually tell the time.

    As a bonus I think this watch could tell the time in many different ways, so then the wearer can select which mode they want to use… for example

    Mode 1) Digit is missing.
    Mode 2) Each circle says 0000 & you count the zeros – so 000 is 3, 00000 is 5 etc
    Mode 3) Each circle says 12345etc – so 123 =3, 12345678 = 8

    There are probably several more. I think its nice to have these options so people can set it to whatever suits them.

    • Thanks for the ideas TF, yeah this format would lend itself to a selection of modes. Also depending on the density of the lcd maybe analogue formats like the ones I mentioned on “CC” would be possible too?
      These different formats would also lend themselves to various animations too!

  7. Mhhh what a wonderful coop 😀 This one looks so nice already before knowing how it works! At first, trying to find the missing number is a bit inconveneient but a) you offer a solution mode and b) this trains your brain. And when you can read it at a glance after a while, it makes you happy – perfect. I like the combination of the friendly and pleasing look and the actually simple time encoding. 5*/I like the metal-carb and the matte black-glossy black versions. Color change rocks!

    • You picked my two favorite colour combinations! spooky! Yeah the time telling method is criptic without having to learn a code or gain a maths degree (ideal for me in both cases lol)
      Im glad you like the look, we tried to keep it looking realistic, which could have resulted in being a little boring. The colour changing adds a little fun back into the mix.

  13. it looks beautiful, but i wouldn’t want this for the same reason i didn’t want the sudoku watch proposed by tokyoflash. it just takes me too long to read it…i know you have a cheat button, but for me, that defeats the purpose. interesting idea though.

    • No probs, cant win them all! ^^ Some folks find codes easier to decypher or maths to work out or blocks to count etc etc. I find this one quite quick and easy as its mostly a visual thing but everyone is different. We’ll get you 100% on the next one! Thanks for the feedback and the comment

    • Heather, I think it’s a LOT easier to read than the Sudoku watch. 😀 After a few goes you get to see pretty quickly which digit is missing from each ring. But, it’s like Pete says, everyone has different propensities.

      • Thanks for taking a second look. I think with a little practice people would just recognise which was missing with having to concentrate. Its a bit like when a word is spelt incorrectly (even if like me you cant spell for toffee) you know its incorrect because it looks wrong. Thats the theory anyway.

        We did discus another format which was even easier to spot the missing number, but Im not sure if Lloyd used it on another design. So I better not spill the beans just in case. This other format would work very well with the ring shaped displays and be more intuative.

    • Im glad you like it BB, The concept is based on one LCD with a facia over the top which in theory should be the most cost effective way. So in theory should be relatively cheap to make. So if I was taking a guess it should be at the lower to middle of TF’s prices. Thanks for the interest and the comment! 😀

  19. I love it ! except for 1 thing : the number are not “chronological”.

    I realized that if there was small circle around every small number, it would look like the circle on the old phone when people had to turn a dial to the number they wanted, release it, & do it again until the full phone number was dialed. ( with the 3rd pic )

    • The reason for the numbers being random as apposed to in chronological is so that the missing number is less obvious. If they were in order it would be much easier to see the missing numbers. This could be a mode so the wearer could choose (like levels of difficulty) Yeah the dials do kinda resemble old retro telephones ^^
