Give Hexagons A Chance – Digital Watch Design

Sam says: “I thought I would give hexagons a chance this time. I made a geometrically simple case and strap in IP black and let little gaps form hexagons all around the watch design.

The time is told in 4 digital numbers, hours in green and minutes in cyan. Each number is shown by two hexagons. If they are aligned one upon the other, the digital numbers are recognized easily. I offer five reading modes to let people decide, how complicated they want it. Modes A – C show different positions of the several numbers. In modes C and D the several numbers are split up. That means, the two hexagons, which show one number, are separated. I suggest to learn how to read the numbers in normal modes to easily read them in the separated modes. I like the cryptic appearance of the last two modes. Especially for the untrained eye they must look confusing. I integrated the light and setting buttons into the case by using the upper and ower edge hexagons. When pressing the light button, all LEDs light up before they show the time. I let the unlit part flicker, to give the impression of a not properly working neon tube.

This watch design is ideal for the geek within, because it is all about decrypting here. I am using digital numbers, so you actually just have to read the watch – no counting, no calculating. You “only” have to pass the barrier of abstraction.”

  6. Looks like simplified version of predators watch. Only alien can tell the time with it. Yes we are alien. And I’m too with what Aphosno said: I would change the modes each day, that’s fun!

  9. In the past hexagons have been dubbed “the buildable circle”, they also tesselate beautifully, creating a watch that can display any number accurately enough to bed read in a “flash”. Also like the way you can choose to crank up the difficulty level a notch once you get used to it. 5*

  10. Wow thank you people for you entries so far! I see, mode A can alreadya bit tricky, but even mode E can be done with some patience. Thanks Ace for linking to my still images to clear up things! Makino and Jordair, cool you took some time to learn, hehehe. That is what the people you would show the watch couldn’t do in a short time, so they go like “what? where do you see a 12:59?” 😉 Hexagons rock!

  11. Hi, Sam. I like the hexagons — they make some digits easier to read than in my Quad design. However, I think the pattern on the strap and face might be too subtle, so that the watch won’t be as interesting as it could be when the LEDs are off. You rendered it beautifully, but, judging from your past designs, I think you could make the rest of the watch as interesting as the LED part.

  13. @ Logan: Heyyy long time no see! Hmhm, yeah I thought this array of hexagons is already pretty much. If I add just a little detail, it multiplies by 40 (or so) and it gets overloaded quickly. The more details a design has, the more it polarizes… I have a more talkative design up my sleeve, just to try it less subtle 😉 Stay tuned! I’m open to suggestions anytime.   15. Very clever design! I like what you have done here – taken the digital 8 figure and transformed to hexagons – genius!!!!

    I’d like to see more colours, but other than that can’t fault it. A design that perfectly fits the Tokyoflash mould.

  20. Very unique. Transferring numbers to hexagons was a great idea. I love how the band retains the hexagons as well. The variations (color and time modes) are really cool. This could have the ability to tell the date (month, day) as well. I would buy this if I could. 5/5
