One Line Watch Concept

Sam came up with this brilliant idea of an analog watch with a single line which combines the hour hand and the minute hand.  The watch also appears like a simple bracelet.

The display has the same material with the strap, but translucent (to light up when it is too dark).  In broad daylight, it just simply looks like someone has just drawn a line on the bracelet.

Time telling is easy as it works like an analog watch.  You don’t have two watch hands, but only one.  Its thick end lays on the hour position, the thin end on the minute position.

  1. Neat idea! I LOVE the look of it. For me, though, I’m bad with analog when there are no numbers or marks, so I would have trouble reading it.
    I know that many people would buy this watch, however. Analog watches without markings sell all the time, and within that category, this watch is killer!! 😀

    • Okay wow 🙂 Yes it is a general decision – do I need the exact time or is it ok if it is intuitive? I totally understand both sides. It is cool you keep a neutral point of view (well a good one for me at least, tehehe). Your “within that category” statement is very important. We compare apples with pears here so it is very wise to distinguish. Thank you for your comment!

    The bracelet looks a bit like my Snap Ring, but the idea of a single line is really good. What a great idea!

    • Thanks for your input Patrick! Snap ring… that gives me ideas (after googling what it actually is, my english is not thaaat good). I was thinking about a closing mechanism, after one night sleeping I said, this watch has to be as simple as the time telling.

  5. Very original idea, almost a 3D quality to the curved hands. The concept is strong, with a clear idea and easy to read display. Looks like it would mostly be worn by women based on its bracelet style, but maybe that is your expected buyer.

    I am a little concerned how you would actually make the hands appear as one piece in every position. It seems like the hands don’t just move, they actually change shape to achieve a different curvature. I am guessing if this is the case, the hands would have to be digital in nature. If that is also true, you now have another problem, your design has a compound curve. Not imposable, but very difficult to achieve a digital display curved in both directions.

    But still a good idea!

    • Oh what a practical comment! You are right, the shape changes, so it has to be digital. There is a link to an image so you can see twelve hours in 5 minute steps here. A twice curved surface as a LDC display has to be possible. If not LCD then some other futuristic technology… I cross my fingers 🙂

  9. Love the shape. It’s simply beautiful. My question would be: how in the world can you get that elegant line to move around. If you get that working, you’d have one very happy buyer. There are so many designs on this blog that I really like, but would not actually purchase. But this would be one I would.

    @ Avatara: You make me blush. Yes I actually planned it for ladies. But as a hobby watch designer I can never estimate the reactions and the tastes. The elegance, the curves, the ease are pretty female. If men like it, then I might consider a more stronger male design as an alternative… Or a more neutral version… Tough task 🙂

  11. My girlfriend askes me again and again when this watch comes out, and I have to disappoint her, that this is still an idea. If I had hundreds of facebook fans, I would send them here lol. I hope they make this watch sam.

  12. I would TOTALLY buy it! So beautiful!!!!!

    But I wonder how to adjust the bracelet… by wrist is REALLY thin and my hand is really small… I think it would keep falling… =(

      I will think about the adjustment. How about using springs on the straps mids? Then you can oben the watch easily and it “grabs” your wrist. Very important point Bárbara.

    I had another idea for the Solar-powered Watch Design you closed the replies on. I’m putting it here since it could work for this design as well:

    Colored e ink. Yes, e ink is black and white and the contrast isn’t that great, but color is on the way. Since these watches don’t need more than two colors, it would be easier than a color display. The resolution is pretty good and the battery life wouldn’t be so bad. I know there are e ink watches already, but they aren’t like these designs.

    Oh yes colored E-ink! I also imagine that would be suitable for the radar/sonar/scanner watches and this one too. I wonder if gradients are possible… Mhhh cool technology 😀
