Broken Digital LED Watch

Design submitted by Mattia from Italy.

We are simply awestruck with Mattia’s bizarre idea for time telling.  He tells us this idea came up when he noticed that the numbers of lines used in classic digital clocks matches perfectly to the 12+11+4 system used in some Tokyoflash watches.

Reading time may not be as easy as digital clocks but it’s far from complicated.  The upper section tells the number of hours and single minutes, lower section tells the minutes in groups of five and indicates am/pm; and is also separated in groups of 15 minutes.  It’s an easy read!

The contrast between the classic digits and Tokyoflash’s LED concept makes this watch one of the most unexpected designs we have seen.  The clean and simple exterior body of the watch adds up to conceal it’s real wacky and fun gimmick.  It absolutely looks like a broken digital watch.  Truly amusing!

hahaha, good one! Nice idea! Could make the case a bit beaten up as well, or have it light up with a touch screen but have to hit it like 10 times to make it turn on to give it that complete BROKEN feel to it. Smart idea, love it!

I like the case used, is classical but with the glass going over the frame is very modern too.
I think that red for the leds is a good choice to match the color of the numbers in the alarm clocks :)

Very clever indeed! I’d love to see this display in a more retro looking case too, bit of 80s styling with some LCD digits. I really like the classic digital LCD look and this is a really smart re-invention with an interesting twist.

Cool idea mattia! it would be great if it could flicker sometimes like if it is really broken. :)

This design is a lot of fun. People would say hey, “your watch is broken” and you would reply yes it’s a BROKEN watch. I can hear it now. “Why would you buy a broken watch for?” From our point of view it’s a great example of how to think outside of the box. It is also attractive looking. :)
