A Binary Analogue Watch Design

Design submitted by Laszlo from Hungary.

A fascinating analogue binary concept here from Laszlo in Hungary. We have sold some binary watches in the past and currently the R75 watch has a binary mode, perfect for mathematicians and computer scientists but really easy for anyone once you get the hang of it.

This design is far from geeky though and has a really interesting aesthetic. The time is displayed in the white segment at 12:00, hours being a combination of the numbers 1, 2, 4 and 8. Minutes being a combination of the numbers 1, 2, 4, 8, 16, 32. The blocks rotate clockwise until they fill the white void to display the time.We love the thinking behind this and the simple analogue feel. Excellent effort Laszlo. Are you a fan of binary watches? 1. This is clever and I can see a lot of thought has gone into this. It must be quite hard to create a new looking binary concept. I do like the binary concept and I have the Tibida watch so I know it’s not hard to master. I’m just not sure about the balance of this with all the action on the left side of the face. Not a fan of the numbers on the face either. I think there is potential here though.

  2. This watch has a big potential and I’d buy it. Black, cooler casing and black background for the LEDs should look cool too. It looks like an complicated aviation watch. I hope to see it in a better 3D version.

  3. The thought behind this is quite good. Though there is a fair amount of math involved you can look at it as long as it takes to get the time, unlike a LED watch where you have about 5 seconds then lights off. Perhaps a bigger face and numbers will assist in reading the time and or a more contrasting colour for hours and minutes or numbers on the dial itself, would help a lot in seeing the time. The changes though would have to look good or takes away from the look. It looks visually great as is, just need a bit of tweaking to make it a bit easier to read perhaps. Just my opinion. Cool design!

  4. Nice to see an analogue submission for a change. Even though we largely sell LED watches at the moment, we are looking to do more LCD and Analogue designs. This is a very nice design and agree some small changes could make it easier to read but the overall concept is very good. One of the designers here is a big fan of this one.

  5. interesting design, i would lose the number display though, but then i can already read binary. maybe make it an option to display it for those that can’t read binary yet, i just think it makes it too easy for anyone to work out the time.
the right side of the watch seems too bare, maybe make the analogue display start from the 10/15 minute area but very faint, gradually coming in bolder as it progresses around the clock, this would avoid a large blank area and give some indication of time flowing.

also, technically, the time display at 12:00 is wrong, it shows 12 hours and 60 minutes, which to me is 1 o’ clock.
minutes should go …,58,59,0,1,… not ..,58,59,60,1,….

  6. アナログなのにアナログっぽくないところがカコイイです。ただ、倍数の表示だから計算で頭が痛くなりそ〜。

  7. Cool 🙂 The case is not ok, but the time display is very nice. I like that is looks so cryptive. Making it half is a comprehensible decision. Maybe 3/4 would be nicer… more cool things to see, tehehe. Analog produce-worthy tokyo flash watch.
